Overview

As the last heiress of the House of North, Alissa knows that striking up a secret friendship with a half-vampire enforcer is dangerous, but Merrick is a temptation she can't resist. But when Alissa is kidnapped, Merrick proves that he will do anything to protect the woman who tempts him with her very existence.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Frost, who usually writes lighthearted paranormals (Would-Be Witch, etc.), thanks her editor for suggesting she write “something dark,” and there’s no question she took the advice to heart. The story opens with demonic slaughter, and violence remains the milieu for a Romeo and Juliet love story between Alissa, a muse of the Etherlin, and Merrick, a ventala (half-human, half-vampire) of the Varden. Alissa is supposed to only inspire popularly acclaimed humans who have recognized potential, but she secretly corresponds with very unqualified Merrick after he saves her from a demon. Merrick is a more intriguing sort, conscious of his warring impulses and bound by a perverse honor. When forces within the Etherlin seek to eliminate Alissa, he invokes all the power at his disposal—including the services of a very grudging fallen angel—to keep her safe. The upshot is an old-fashioned gangster story with paranormal window dressing, and a strong stomach is recommended. Agent: McIntosh & Otis. (Jan.)

Dark Story with Romance, Twists, & Turns

Alissa is the good girl, Merrick plays the bad boy, and they both do it oh so well. The story opens in the height of action and continues with a quick pace throughout the book. Even in the downtime scenes, the getting to know our characters bit, it still flows quickly and fluidly, never a dull moment. Learning about both Alissa¿s past and Merrick¿s was interesting and often downright entertaining. (Merrick¿s definitely the winner for the crazy friend story.) Alissa¿s character is endearing and I felt for her and the facade she had to put on every day in order to play her role appropriately and care for her father. Merrick, while harsh in some of the things he does, never made me hate him for what he did, not once. If anything he¿s someone you swoon over without thinking twice.

The plot had twists and turns and navigation's I didn¿t expect. While the romance was expected (and wanted!) by reading the summary, it was still tense and moving. Who doesn¿t want someone that only has eyes for them and would move heaven and earth to get to them? When I finished this book I realized I¿d love to read more about where the characters go, and whoohoo ¿ that¿s why there are more books to come. I will definitely be picking up the next book in The Etherlin series.

This was another winner from Kimberly Frost! She delivered with this new series. She is able to create a cast of characters that are both complex and facinating. This cast of characters include muses,
half-vampires,demons and a fallen angel. It hooked me from the beginning and continued to keep me interested.

Alissa North,a muse, first met Merrick, a half-vampire, when he saved not only her life but others from a demon that held them captive. They are instantly attracted and a secret friendship develops. It is a secret because they are suppose to be enemies. When Merrick saves Alissa's life again they realize their friendship has developed into deeper feelings that neither one of them want to admit.

I can't wait for the next installment in this series and the Southern Witch series!
