Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Frost, who usually writes lighthearted paranormals (Would-Be Witch, etc.), thanks her editor for suggesting she write “something dark,” and there’s no question she took the advice to heart. The story opens with demonic slaughter, and violence remains the milieu for a Romeo and Juliet love story between Alissa, a muse of the Etherlin, and Merrick, a ventala (half-human, half-vampire) of the Varden. Alissa is supposed to only inspire popularly acclaimed humans who have recognized potential, but she secretly corresponds with very unqualified Merrick after he saves her from a demon. Merrick is a more intriguing sort, conscious of his warring impulses and bound by a perverse honor. When forces within the Etherlin seek to eliminate Alissa, he invokes all the power at his disposal—including the services of a very grudging fallen angel—to keep her safe. The upshot is an old-fashioned gangster story with paranormal window dressing, and a strong stomach is recommended. Agent: McIntosh & Otis. (Jan.)

Dark Story with Romance, Twists, & Turns

Alissa is the good girl, Merrick plays the bad boy, and they both do it oh so well. The story opens in the height of action and continues with a quick pace throughout the book. Even in the downtime scenes, the getting to know our characters bit, it still flows quickly and fluidly, never a dull moment. Learning about both Alissa¿s past and Merrick¿s was interesting and often downright entertaining. (Merrick¿s definitely the winner for the crazy friend story.) Alissa¿s character is endearing and I felt for her and the facade she had to put on every day in order to play her role appropriately and care for her father. Merrick, while harsh in some of the things he does, never made me hate him for what he did, not once. If anything he¿s someone you swoon over without thinking twice.

The plot had twists and turns and navigation's I didn¿t expect. While the romance was expected (and wanted!) by reading the summary, it was still tense and moving. Who doesn¿t want someone that only has eyes for them and would move heaven and earth to get to them? When I finished this book I realized I¿d love to read more about where the characters go, and whoohoo ¿ that¿s why there are more books to come. I will definitely be picking up the next book in The Etherlin series.

this book was "good" and I think that is the best way

this book was "good" and I think that is the best way I can sum it up. i was excited to see that she started another series considering i read her entire southern witch series. as for this book I don't believe it live up to the standard I put her books at after reading her first series i fell in love with all her characters.
all that bleeds is a good read, but it was not until the last 10 chapters that I could not put it down. in my opinion, it took to long to finish.half way through the book i picked up another series and stop at the second book to finish this one. the characters in this book are what you would expect them to be except for alissa, who has wayy more secrets than she should have, it took a bit from her character. merrick is all that hes supposed to be an more. my favorite character was alissa father! i found him to be so funny (even though he somewhat crazy).
in the end it still left me with a lot of questions about what becomes of the etherlin. maybe i'll read book two i don't know may be if i have time to wait before another book come out. I'll read it in the mean time ( i don't like the cover for the second book though... the cover of the first is what got me enticed into reading all that bleeds)

I found this a very original world. Etherlin is an elite community wherein the descendants of the original nine muses dwell, doing the work of their ancestors, offering inspiration and support to their aspirants. Pretty cool. Alissa inspires writers and artists. She’s beautiful and is sort of the lead muse, in power and honor. But she’s no fluff heroine. She’s smart and has a mind of her own.

Outside of Etherlin, humans co-exist with a semi-tamed half-vampire species. Merrick is a feared ventala enforcer. When he killed a demon gone berserk at an Etherlin ball five years before, Alissa broke all rules and developed a secret pen pal relationship with her natural enemy.

She’s light. He’s dark. And they’re pen pals. How fun is that?

Then she’s kidnapped by the bad guys, and lands on Merrick’s side of the wall, almost bled dry by her captors. He rescues her. The story is a thrilling mystery with a heart-wrenching romance filled with sexual tension in a doomed matching of two beings who can never be together.

I read the intro novella First Light, in the Tied With a Bow anthology and was intrigued. So glad I picked this up. Loved it!

This was another winner from Kimberly Frost! She delivered with this new series. She is able to create a cast of characters that are both complex and facinating. This cast of characters include muses,
half-vampires,demons and a fallen angel. It hooked me from the beginning and continued to keep me interested.

Alissa North,a muse, first met Merrick, a half-vampire, when he saved not only her life but others from a demon that held them captive. They are instantly attracted and a secret friendship develops. It is a secret because they are suppose to be enemies. When Merrick saves Alissa's life again they realize their friendship has developed into deeper feelings that neither one of them want to admit.

I can't wait for the next installment in this series and the Southern Witch series!
