All That I Am

Barnes & Noble - David Sprague
Given the amount of octane that was injected into his career by the multi-platinum collaborations album Supernatural and replenished with the similarly stacked Shaman, it's not surprising that Carlos Santana would choose to try to catch lightning in a bottle again. He does a pretty decent job of doing just that on All That I Am, largely because he doesn't try to re-create Supernatural's sound, just its engaging vibe. The disc's best songs are the ones on which Santana and his guest du jour try to play off each other rather than simply staying out of each others' way -- most notably "I'm Feeling You," a second go-round with Shaman partner Michelle Branch, who wraps ...

The disc's best songs are the ones on which Santana and his guest du jour try to play off each other rather than simply staying out of each others' way -- most notably "I'm Feeling You," a second go-round with Shaman partner Michelle Branch, who wraps herself mistily around one of Santana's more mellifluous melodies. Santana spends a good bit of his time here looking for -- and invariably finding -- a groove to lean into, as he does on "My Man," a sultry slice of neo-soul that showcases Mary J. Blige's prodigious pipes, and "Cry Baby Cry," a '70s-styled churner that pairs Joss Stone and Sean Paul to good effect. The disc isn't bereft of instrumental flash, of course: "Trinity" finds Santana mixing it up with fellow string-slingers Kirk Hammett of Metallica and Robert Randolph, whose pedal steel provides an earthy counterpoint to the leader's spacey spelunking. Not every pairing is fortuitous -- American Idol Bo Bice's appearance on "Brown Skin Girl," for instance, sounds like an outtake from the reality show -- but Santana seldom gets bogged down. Like the man himself, Santana's All That I Am is a burst of radiant, positive energy.
All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Like 2002's Shaman, this follows the blueprint that producer
ecord mogul Clive Davis laid down on 1999's Supernatural, which means that apart from a cut or two, Santana functions as a supporting musician to a parade of guest stars singing pop songs. Here, Santana and Davis try to make lightning strike again, having Michelle Branch, who sang "The Game of Love" on Shaman, sing the soundalike "I'm Feeling You," which she also had a hand in writing, and the result isn't bad. The biggest names here are Mary J. Blige, Big Boi, Aerosmith's Steven Tyler, and the ubiquitous will.i.am from the Black Eyed Peas, and the production is clean and safe, while the songs are professional but predictable.

Awesome CD! Bo & Company is Sweet Candy for my ears!!

I have listened to many songs by Santana, but have never purchased one of his CD's before now. I bought this in support of Bo Bice because I enjoy his music so much. I received this CD today and I must say that I have listened to it all already and am very pleased with everyone's contribution ~ especially BO's!!! Well worth every penny.

    This CD "DEFINITELY ROCKS"!!!!!

Hey, this CD rocks for sure. Being a Huge Santana Fan, this CD is one to get. All the songs are awesome. All that joined him on this album did an awesome job. This is one CD that I will play over and over again. I am so glad he chose Bo Bice to join him as well. He definitely knows fresh new talent when he hears it.

    Santana Forever

Once again Santana puts out an album that's great to listen to and makes you want to get up and dance. My favorite tracks are 10, 11, and 12, with Bo Bice's Brown Skin Girl my favorite. Couldn't get the tune out of my head. He did a great job with it and I would buy it in a heartbeat.

Bo Bice's Song Sticks in Your Head!

Ok, Santana is great and so is Michele, love Josh Stone, BUT.. this one all sounds the same as before. However,Bo Bice's Brown Skin Girl sticks in your head and you'll be singing it all day...try the whole song and you'll see. Bo is the only one I will buy off of this one.

    Bo Bice Bites!!!!!

wow, read the previous memo's and it's for sure they were either written by his mom or the record label 's marketing team. On second thouight his mom would be more objective. This is a nice piece of Santana pop and it grows on you. Like in the 40's where everyone listened to a 3 minute ballad just to hear a 15 second solo by Charlie Bird Parker. Santana shines.. B .O for bo...

    Really Great Album from Santana

I had only heard some of the more well known Santana songs like Game of Love with Michelle Branch and Smooth with Rob Thomas before this album but I think all the songs on this album are good. I like the songs I'm Feeling You, Twisted and Cry Baby Cry but my favorite song is Brown Skin Girl. There's just something about that song that I really like.
