Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Children's Literature
Hubbard's striking, colorful art gives pizzazz to a text that falls somewhere between greeting card banality and character counts tract. "You live with Compassion" is illustrated by a girl replacing a baby bird in a nest, and "You Forgive" by a person hugging the leg of an elephant that is standing on a squashed bicycle. The choice of the elephant is perhaps intended to imply the subtexts "forgive and forget" and "an elephant never forgets," although it also suggests "The Blind Men and the Elephant." "You are a Loyal friend/ You embrace Peace/ You give Joy/ You are the Gift," the book concludes. Perhaps more suitable as a lavish greeting card than as a bonafide book, some readers might wish to use it as a springboard for discussing the admirable qualities of character manifested by the eponymous "You." 2000, Putnam Publishing Group, Ages 4 to 8, $12.99.
