Knowing when to flex their muscle and when to wear their hearts on their collective sleeve -- that's the wisdom that separates these Canadians from their mainstream hard-rock peers. Sure, a lot of bands try to play both sides of the game, but frontman Chad Kroeger's supple pipes and knack for cranking out heartfelt power ballads (like the chart-storming "Photograph") give Nickelback a leg up on the rest. All the Right Reasons is divided relatively evenly between those eminently sing-along-worthy mid-tempo tracks and decidedly heavier numbers, most notably the punishing "Side of a Bullet" -- which contains posthumous guitar work from former Damageplan axe-man "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, whose brother donated the tapes for the song, a tribute to the slain musician. There are a few surprises on All the Right Reasons, such as "Next Contestant," which opens on a jittery, syncopated note that has a decidedly Euro vibe, then explodes into panoramic, '80s-styled harmonies. When attempting to get back in touch with their sensitive side, the boys tend to get a little too mawkish -- "Savin' Me" would be an agreeable enough tough-guy ballad were it not so fussily dressed up in strings and piano -- but at least Nickelback aren't treading water in the manner of so many nü-metallers. And when they manage to catch a particularly buoyant wave -- as on "Someone That You're With," which has an almost Soul Asylum–like ambience -- it's clear that, while their sound may sometimes come across as mercenary, Nickelback are making music for All the Right Reasons.

All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
With their fourth album, All the Right Reasons, Nickelback ditches any pretense of being a grunge band and finally acknowledges they're a straight-up heavy rock band. Not that they've left the angst of grunge behind: they're a modern rock band living in a post-grunge world, so there's lots of tortured emotions threaded throughout the 11 songs here. But where their previous albums roiled with anger -- their breakthrough "How You Remind Me" was not affectionate, it was snide and cynical -- there's a surprisingly large sentimental streak running throughout All the Right Reasons, and it's not just limited to heart-on-sleeve power ballads like "Far Away" and "Savin' Me," the latter being the latest entry in their soundalike sweepstakes. No, lead singer/songwriter Chad Kroeger is in a particularly pensive mood here, looking back fondly at his crazy times in high school on "Photograph" ("Look at this photograph/Every time I do it makes me laugh/How did our eyes get so red?/And what the hell is on Joey's head?"), lamenting the murder of Dimebag Darrell on "Side of a Bullet" (where a Dimebag solo is overdubbed), and, most touching of all, imagining "the day when nobody died" on "If Everyone Cared" (which would be brought about "If everyone cared and nobody cried/If everyone loved and nobody lied"). Appropriately enough for an album that finds Kroeger's emotional palette opening up, Nickelback tries a few new things here, adding more pianos, keyboards, and acoustic guitars to not just ballads, but a few of their big, anthemic rockers; they even sound a little bit light and limber on "Someone That You're With," the fastest tune here and a bit of relief after all the heavy guitars. All this makes for a more varied Nickelback album, but it doesn't really change their essence.

This is actually the first time I listened to Nickelback. I think they are great.... I drew a co-worker's name as his secret santa and this was on his list. I listened to it before I ordered one for him and one for me. Thank you, Kathy

All the right reasons is the best rock album in history...all of the eleven songs are wonderful-nickleback mixes it up with some slower ballads and some hard rockers-animals (song 4) is the perfect hard rocking party song while far away is a slow emotional ballad-while staying true to nickelbacks hardrock roots-this album is stunningly crafted and keeps the listeners attention the whole time. This is a very good album!

Nickelback have improved so much since their last album! Every song on here is so dynamic and diverse musically. This is definately better than "The Long Road"(2003) and their best since "Silver Side Up"(2001). I'm glad they're getting mainstream attention. Go out and buy this masterpiece!

I thought that the album The Long Road was only good for Feelin Way Too Damn Good. But, this whole album is great! Nickelback proves that they have a past in Photograph, meaning that they had crushes, and all that, too. Out of all of the songs on this album, Photograph is my fave. I listen to it whenever I can.

I had no idea Nickelback were such great artists! I love every song on this album. These guys are unique. They touch up on things that no other artist seems to. From now on I know who's CD to buy first! Continue to make it great...

I love Nickelback with ALL of my heart. I could go on to tell you about their uniqueness and whatnot, but I won't. All of their reviews have been great. Go buy the album. It's amazing. I promise. 3 Jayme

This cd is awesome. I have both The Long Road and Silver Side Up, and this one is so much better. There is a lot of variet, going from the power ballad "Far Away" to anger-filled "Side of A Bullet", this cd is amazing. Definitely the best CD I've ever heard.

I had heard cd's being played by my kids and asked "who's that?" I went and bought it and consistently play it. Listen to the lyrics for all, I have read Chad writes from personal experiences for his lyrics-makes the songs even better knowing that. Very versatile. I was hoping to find "Three Sided Coin" but it is not available here, which did surprise me. So I am purchasing "The State" and I doubt I will be disappointed....

I just seen nickelback in MN. and it was the best show and time I had in a long time. I wish they were in concert at Rock Fest in Caddot WI because I would go just to see them again. I usually like Country Music and old time rock & roll but my brother turned me on to these guys. These guys have talent. To the guy that thinks they do not put on a good show, I think you have your own hidden agendas behind your thoughts or you just don't know good rock & roll when you hear it. NICKELBACK U ROCK.

I purchased this CD to continue my Nickelback collection and found it as enjoyable as the last one. If you like Nickelback's music and lyrics this is a must have.
