Overview

Listen! What do you hear when you get ready to sleep? Meli hears the fruit bats squeak, squeak, squeaking . . . Lekeni hears the jackal yip, yip, yipping . . . Moshe hears a hammer ping, ping, pinging . . . Armand hears a violin singing . . . Fiona hears the waves lapping . . .

Imagine friends from all over the world, children whom you haven’t met, but who are listening, too. From Western Samoa to Kenya, from Israel to Italy to Scotland and more, children are listening to the reassuring sounds that surround them before they drift off to dreamland.

Melodious sounds that children might hear as day turns into night in various places throughout the world are presented in this lyrical go-to-sleep book. Softly hued, gentle paintings depict a young child, thinking of children just like him in far-away places listening . . . softly dreaming . . . as they get ready to fall asleep.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal - Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1-A look at what children all over the world might hear at night. Framed by a son's bedtime question to his father, the simple text presents round-faced, large-eyed children from Kampuchea, Israel, Japan, Scotland, and nine other countries who hear, for instance, "...the jackal/yip, yip, yipping/out among the thorn trees/searching for food" (Kenya). Double-page, acrylic paintings resemble tinted woodcuts and each child's face is framed against a background depicting the source of the sound: grandpa's violin, waves, a foghorn, or Abuela's rocking chair. Solid reinforcement for the idea that children are similar even in their differences, this book is also useful as a goodnight lap read as it will reassure preschoolers who are nervous about night noises.-Susan Hepler, Burgundy Farm Country Day School, Alexandria, VA Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.
