Meet the Author

James Herriot (1916-1995) was the bestselling author of memoirs including All Creatures Great and Small, All Things Bright and Beautiful, The Lord God Made Them All, and Every Living Thing. At age 23, Herriot qualified for veterinary practice with the Glasgow Veterinary College, and moved to the town of Thirsk in Yorkshire to work in a rural practice. He would live in, work in, and write about the region for the rest of his life. Though he dreamed for years of writing a book, his veterinary work and his family kept him busy, and he did not start writing until the age of 50. In 1979, he was awarded the title Order of the British Empire (OBE). His veterinary practice in Yorkshire, England, is now tended by his son, Jim Wight.

Another truly enjoyable book by James Herriot

This is the third book in this classic series. I have enjoyed them all immensely. I have even started turning down the pages on my favorite stories so that I can enjoy them later (which I have never done with any other books). These stories make you laugh and cry. My husband and I have also picked up at the library the tv series based on these books put out by BBC. The DVDs are quite enjoyable and actually show many live-animal births.

    A tough life

The author is caught between the love of his wife, friends and animals and the devotion to his nation during World War 2, and it makes for a most loving and interesting book.

Not all things are wise and wonderful

I started reading this book about two months ago. I never expected to finish this book within one month. I thought that this book was going to be pretty boring. Then, i started to read this book and it began to get very interesting. This book is about a man that is in the airforce. He has a side job that he enjoys alot. He is a vetrinarian. He doesn't have much luck with the animals, anages to atleast save one animal. On his way back to the base camp, this family car stops him and asks if he's the vet. He answers their question and within seconds, the family is pulling their dog out of the vehicle and starts asking him if he can help the dog. He takes a look at the dog and realizes that the dog has a ball wedged down it's throte. He manages to get to get the ball out and saves the dog. I enjoyed this book because i'm an animal lover. If your an animal lover, you'll enjoy this book too.

    All things wise and wonderful

Having read James Herriot's previous books, I had high expectations for All Things Wise and Wonderful. They were more than fulfilled from the very beginning of this exemplary read. James Herriot's third book is another classic all the way, filled with even more hilarious stories of his own personal experiences. He'll toss your emotions as he goes from heart wrenching tribulations, to those laugh-out-loud comedic moments he's famous for. In this story James brings us with him to the RAF where, during training, he recalls his days in Yorkshire and shares with us some of his most entertaining memories yet, in his humorous writing style. Separated from his expectant wife, Helen, James is in a different world then that to which he is accustomed, going through a fast-paste training course in which he's worked liked a horse. Then he gets tossed into an even faster paced flight school and is in the air before he knows how to fly. All the time he brings us back to Yorkshire, and the veterinary practice. Here we meat again with the unique personalities of his partner, Siegfried Farnon and his unorthodox younger brother, Tristan Farnon. He takes us through the ironies of his trials and triumphs, including the always-awkward instances with Helen, at the time before they were married. There are still a few stories of Tristan's mischievous doings, and of course the rampages of his older brother that always follow As the pages flow, and you are sucked further into the book, a strange event brings the climax to a sudden drop and leaves you reading in disbelief. This book is a definite must-read for anyone who enjoys hilarious stories. The incredible characters of Yorkshire, the abundant material, and a great writer painting a vivid picture, are what make this book a classic bestseller.

    so wise and wonderful

Herriot's books are certain to please anyone. In the third, James must train in the R.A.F., far from expecting Helen. It's the little things, though that make you like Mr. Herriot as a person and veterinary surgeon more. I really especially enjoyed the stories that included mischeivious Tristan. If you have never read one of these classic novels, you are really missing one of those great ones.
