Add to that sun, birds, water, balls, umbrellas, towels, lemonade, and "YOU!" Children will delight in the exuberance of the text and the vibrant illustrations that bring all of the sights, smells, and textures to life. The characters in the gouache-and-watercolor illustrations are similar to those in Snowman, but they have a wonderful, soft quality that perfectly conveys the hazy lazy joy of being at the shore. ALICE SCHERTLE is an acclaimed poet with many picture books to her credit, including Down the Road, illustrated by E. B. Lewis, and William and Grandpa, illustrated by Lydia Dabcovich, which received the Christopher Medal. She lives in the Berkshires of Massachusetts.

BARBARA LAVALLEE is an artist and illustrator best known for Mama, Do You Love Me?, written by Barbara M. Joosse. She lives in Alaska.
