Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: David B. Conley, MD (Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine)
Description: This is a practical guide to the practice of allergy assessment in the field of otolaryngology. The authors cover basic methods of patient evaluation, allergy testing, and treatment. Both medical and nursing viewpoints are covered in an integrated fashion.
Purpose: The book is designed to provide a basic introduction to physicians and ancillary staff who intend to start providing allergy care in their practice. A logical and comprehensive approach to the practical aspects of clinical otolaryngologic allergy covers topics from diagnosis to testing to treatment. This provides the essential information necessary for setting up allergy care in a medical practice.
Audience: The audience includes otolaryngologists who intend to start an otolaryngologic allergy practice, as well as family physicians, pediatricians, and other primary care providers. In addition, the book is intended for trained ancillary personnel who contribute a great deal of hands on care in the testing and treatment of allergy patients. These are the appropriate audiences for the book and the authors are well recognized experts in the area of otolaryngologic allergy.
Features: The content is focused on the practical aspects of diagnosis, testing, and treatment of otolaryngologic allergy. The chapters are logically organized and present excellent descriptions of in vivo techniques and interpretation, as well as in vitro testing. A systematic approach to immunotherapy is described as well as other treatments for allergy including selection of medication and environmental control.
Assessment: This is a focused text intended as an introductory guide to physicians and staff in the process of adding the care of ear, nose, and throat allergy to their practices. The basic and practical approach presented here will be very useful to physicians and staff new to the field of allergy care. This is a very approachable introduction to otolaryngologic allergy for otolaryngology residents in training. The overall quality of the text is first rate and the combined physician and nursing perspectives create an uniquely integrated text.
