Overview

No matter how you voted in the 2010 election, both Democrats and Republicans can agree that there is one indispensable guide to people, politics, and power in Washington. The Almanac of American Politics is the gold standard—the book everyone involved, invested, or interested in American politics must have on their reference shelf.

As in previous editions, the 2012 Almanac includes profiles of every member of Congress and every governor. It offers in-depth and completely up-to-date narrative profiles of all 50 states and 435 House districts, covering everything from economics to history to, of course, politics. The new edition also contains Michael Barone’s sharp-eyed analysis of the 2010 congressional elections, detailing significant trends, redistricting initiatives, and the like.

Full of maps, census data, and information on topics ranging from campaign expenditures to voting records to interest group ratings, the 2012 Almanac of American Politics presents everything you need to know about American politics in snappy prose and framed by cogent analysis.

“Real political junkies get two Almanacs: one for the home and one for the office.”—Chuck Todd, NBC

“It’s simply the oxygen of the political world. We have the most dog-eared copy in town.”—Judy Woodruff, PBS News Hour

“Michael Barone is to politics what statistician-writer Bill James is to baseball, a mix of historian, social observer, and numbers cruncher who illuminates his subject with  perspective and a touch of irreverence.”—Chicago Tribune

“Indispensable . . . this compendium of statistics and information has gone as far as humanly possible.”—Washington Post

Editorial Reviews

Washington Post

“The Almanac is so much more than just the names and numbers of our political world. It’s a deep dive into the texture of the country and its politics, packed with interesting and informative facts that are not only fodder for . . . trivia nights but also really bring to life each and every district.”
Los Angeles Times

“A must for political junkies.”
New York Review of Books

“Barone’s invaluable compendium stays close to the ground. . . . It’s the small, sometimes peculiar, spectacularly all-American details that leap out.”—New York Review of Books

This book is loaded with information. It provides data concerning every state, including population, household income, home value,
population composition by race/ethnicity, education, etc. This is followed by a summary of presidential politics in the state, including result of the last election, the governor, the states' senators, and finally a synopsis concerning all of the states house members. This book is the last word for anyone interested in government/poloitics.

best guide for the american voter

"the almanac of american politics" is very well researched and very hard to put down. it is a very handy guide that has every senator and congressman and everyone of their offices listed along with all of their contact information as well as their voting records and ratings and how they came out in different elections comparing them to their different opponents along with a very fasinating bio. this is one of the best guides for the voter to have so they can get to know their congressman and senators and those individuels in washington. this would truly make a great gift for a friend or family member.
