?Honesty and grace is an accomplishment most writers are unable to achieve. In Almost Back by Jami Janes this accomplishment has been reached. Janes tells the story of truth, the story of Brenda Cavanaugh and her husband Dick Genest. A story so profound it shakes you from the inside. She writes fluently and creates an atmosphere of words that brings you more and more into each chapter and each feeling remembered, by Brenda, her family, Dick's family and all who had known him. She portrays the feelings of Brenda, and Dick through words extraordinary well, with a plethora of grace and honesty. Her accuracy is precise, with all of the letters she had access to from when Dick had written to Brenda and Brenda to Dick, allowed her to release the acute history that shows the true story of a soldier in Vietnam. As Robert MacNeil stated, 'Anyone who wishes to know what those years were really like, cleansed of glorifying rhetoric or political cant, will find it, searingly, in these pages.' It has been an honor to be afforded the opportunity to gain the insight of a drafted soldier, and all those who had been torn from their homes to be sacrificed in a war only truly told in this book.
