Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
This Zondervan picture book tells a story that any child or parent can appreciate. A household is quiet and organized, peaceful and predictable; and then along comes a child, very welcome but hardly quiet or predictable. With an affectionate wink, Along Came You shows kids the deep impact they have on their parents' daily lives. An inspirational read-along.
Kirkus Reviews
This misguided attempt to make a child feel special unfolds in the voice of a doting mother who tells her daughter a sentimental story contrasting her life before and after having a child. The text follows a "before you/after you" pattern with comparisons that will be familiar to adult readers but often mystifying to the intended younger audience. For example, young children won't understand (or care about) the distinction between a house "decorated with style" and one "decorated with love," and only older children with a good grasp of mathematical reasoning would comprehend reading books of a thousand pages versus reading one picture book a thousand times. The illustrations show the mother and daughter engaging in the activities of their current life, but the mother's old way of life is not shown, which would have provided a clear contrast to her present-day world. A brief introductory quotation from the Book of Psalms gives the book a religious orientation, though there is no other religious content. (Picture book. 3-5)

    Great Read

I bought this book for my nieces and their Mom. She has two beautiful daughters that she adopted last year. This book so perfectly told their story. No matter how your child came into your life this book lets them know how wonderful your days are since they arrived.

a fun sweet book to share with small (and big) friends

First, I should say that I know Karona, who has cared for and taught both my sons, so I have followed her journey to become an author. Fortunately, not only is she a kind, creative person and a good storyteller, but she can also write!

This lovely book, with delightful illustrations by Ms Corke which illuminate the text, encapsulates in brief but well chosen phrases what we go through when we change from being adults to becoming parents-activities we may give up to make way for even greater pleasures- sharing with our children.

We spend time with a mother and young daughter and the enjoyment they share together in their simple routines as the mother tells about how life was before her child, and how much it has changed- and how much joy she has gained.

As a teacher, I could see using this in a classroom to talk about daily activities and time. As a parent, I enjoy reading this with my sons and talking about our "befores and afters". "Along Came You" is appropriate for all adults and children (even older siblings with younger siblings can relate to it!). Next, I(and my sons) hope that Karona will write a companion book that features boys and maybe their fathers. . .

Charming picture book captures the joy of being a parent

Along Came You by Karona Drummond and Estelle Corke is a touching look at how a mother's life changes after she has a child. First, Mia's thoughts: The book was about Mommy and me and how much we love each other. I really liked at the end where the mom said that life was amazing after you [the little girl]. That was the sweetest thing! There was a funny picture in there where the mom had food in her mouth so she looked like a walrus *giggles*. This book made me feel a thousand times a million happy because it reminded me of our family and my family makes me happy! It made me laugh, and I love to laugh! Now my (Mom's) thoughts. This book about a mother's love thoroughly captured the fun and joy of being a mother in the subtle and not so subtle ways our lives change. Meals, travel, and even sleep will never be the same after a child is born. Corke's illustrations have just the right amount of whimsy and emotion. The language is simple, and the repetitive structure allowed Mia to try to guess what was coming next. It's a sweet book, perfect for expecting or new moms, or even for old timers like me!

Lovely children's book to share with your child.

"Along Came You" is a fun story that reveals a mother's love for her child. The mother in the story embraces the numerous changes that have come about in her life after her daughter came along. Love the story...it is precious. The illustrations are also beautiful.
