Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Zella Cunningham
The pictures in this colorful alphabet book will capture and hold the attention of non- and beginning readers alike. The text consists mainly of kindergarten and first grade sight words, as well as several challenging new vocabulary words. Careful attention to the pictures will guide the listener or reader to the meaning of action words like gallops, perches, and waltzes. An excellent read-along for one child or a read-aloud to an entire class, the parade of animals roll, carry, or wear the letters of the alphabet. An additional bonus is the use of adjectives to describe some of the characters—clapping clown, friendly fox, and royal queen. Even though the letters are not drawn in typical manuscript form, they are still distinguishable. All are uppercase letters, except the letter u. The lyrical sentences are written in delightful rhyme. A more experienced reader might be confused by the absence of the usual tittle symbol over the letter i, but the book is delightful! Various animals, a couple of people and a few objects, all starting with the appropriate letter, parade through the alphabet. One or two letters and their designated representatives are featured on their own page as they take readers from A to Z. An ostrich rides on a float with a large letter "O" behind it, while a panda and polar bear march with a banner sporting the letter "P." One, two or three rhymed couplets accompany each scene, often heavy with alliteration: "C is for the clapping CLOWN who wears a cowboy hat. / D is for the dancing DOG who waltzes with a cat! // E is for the ELEPHANT who waves at everyone. / F is for the friendly FOX who fiddles just for fun." There are some clever moments here and there ("L is for the LEOPARD who likes to count his spots"), but mostly the text is nothing new. The lively paintings of friendly creatures in bright colors drawn with playful line are what give the book energy, although some of the visuals come across as improbable rather than whimsical (a unicorn carrying an umbrella in its hoof?). The letters are written in a variety of typefaces, colors, patterns and fonts, so this may be best for more experienced alphabet-book readers. While not spectacular, it is an amusing spectacle all the same. (Board book. 2-4)

There are so many alphabet books out there that it is really difficult to come up with a creative new way of delivering the same information. But The Alphabet Parade does a pretty good job of giving children something they haven't seen before. The things chosen to represent each letter of the alphabet all fit under the parade or circus theme. The text is written in rhyme, and it's done very well. Other than Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, I haven't seen any other rhyming alphabet books that I actually enjoyed reading to my kids. The illustrations really made this book. They are bright, fun, and energetic. AG Jatkowska's style is warm and cute, perfect for the toddlers that will be reading this book. Overall, this is a great choice for an alphabet book. Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The Alphabet Parade by Charles Ghigna My rating: 4 of 5 stars What a beautifully illustrated book that can engage children on many different reading levels. The Alphabet Parade by Charles Ghigna takes you on a parade through the alphabet from A to Z. Younger kids can enjoy the pictures, older can recognize the letters, and those a little older can pick out more sight words and read along. My daughter had so much fun helping read this book aloud that we read it twice.
