Overview

Generally agreed to be one of the most important contributors to Art Nouveau, the Czech artist Alphonse Mucha was trained, celebrated and lived most of his life in Paris. His unforgettably iconic images of Sarah Bernhardt and others embody the spirit of the fin de siècle. But underneath his successful career as an artist and poster designer lay a passionate Slav nationalist whose most important and long neglected works are still being painstakingly restored and exhibited in the Czech republic. This book is the first comprehensive overview of his life and work and is published in association with the Mucha Museum in Prague.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
This lovely book explores every facet of his life and work
Library Journal
The 1992 establishment of the Mucha Foundation and its subsequent exhibitions renewed interest in Alphonse Mucha (1890-1939), a long-obscure Czech decorative artist known for Art Nouveau posters. This, the only available overview of his life and art, covers the artist's lesser-known work in drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, and jewelry design, with extensive discussion of how the art relates to his moral beliefs and patriotism. Edited by the wife of the artist's grandson, the book includes articles by such authorities as Petr Wittlich, an art history professor at Charles University in Prague. There is a degree of overlap with other sources, as some of the content comes from a now o.p. exhibition catalog, Alphonse Mucha: The Spirit of Art Nouveau, which was written by a few of the same authors. Nonetheless, a nicely illustrated, authoritative, and readable introduction to the life and work of the artist; recommended for all academic and most public libraries.-Eric Linderman, East Cleveland P.L., OH Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
