Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Lilliam Oliva Collmann
As with other books in the "Ciencia asombrosa (Amazing Science)" series, the explanations begin by comparing how clouds are formed, the types of clouds, and the states of water in the sky to what a child knows, a glass of water, ice cubes, and steaming hot chocolate. Thus the concepts of liquid, solids, and gas can become readily accessible and linked to how clouds emerge as the water in the air changes from gas to liquid or solid, as affected by changes in temperature. From this follows the classification of clouds. Cirrus clouds, high up in the sky, are made of ice and look like feathers or horses' tails. Stratocumulus, lower in the sky, are made of water, stretching across like grey sheets. Cumulus clouds resemble ice cream cones or cotton candy. When they turn grey, they bring rain and are called nimbus. As the tiny drops of water in a cloud coalesce, raindrops form, become heavy and we have rain! If it gets cold, the water in the clouds freezes and soon little bits of ice join to make snowflakes. Do not be fooled by the floating, tranquil clouds. A lot goes on inside a cloud. When tiny water droplets inside the cloud crash and rub against each other when moved by a strong wind, sparks fly and we have lightning. Of course, watch out for the funnel-shaped clouds that touch the ground: tornados! The book is complete with a table of contents, an index, instructions for keeping a cloud journal, an additional page of interesting facts, a glossary, and a page with library and Internet resources. This book would be a great addition to a kindergarten through second grade science curriculum.
