This book really is great. It captures your attention from the start and keeps you on the interested all of the way through. I like the fact that the heroin in the story was feminine but also not a shrinking violet. She was strong and brave and fought for what she believed in.
Lynda Scott's tale of a woman thrust into an alternative earth is very imaginative. After waking up on alternative earth, Liane is rescued by Devyn, who is the very image of her ex-husband. Circumstances force them to act as husband and wife, a situation neither is happy about. Devyn does not know if Liane's stories of where she came from make her crazy or a spy to Devyn's double life. He is both Bard to the humans and the Qui'arel and Reiver, savior of Qui'arel brides. Liane just wants to get home, hasn't the slightest idea of how, and nobody believes her! The setting is our earth - sort of. The Qui'arel (aliens) have assumed control of earth and prevented man's technological development. They have infused their rule and their technology into a medieval society. The Qui'arel take the first born human female child of every family as the bride bounty. Human males often serve as soldiers for the Qui'arel. Human population is dwindling, and, while the Qui'arel population has increased, their technology is failing. This background is a perfect pot for brewing a rebellion that needs only the motivation to set it off. Liane and Devyn as motivator and rebel are both strong characters in this story. Liane is smart while Devyn is charming and both are tough cookies! While Devyn acts the inept Bard and feigns allegiance to the evil Qui'arel mistress, Liane must struggle to learn the alien science so she can find her way home. Their contrived marriage keeps them together and it is possible they are falling for each other! I really liked this story. It is very accessible, but complex enough to keep me engrossed. At the end, I would have like to know a little more about the Qui'arel people, but the result was a satisfying conclusion to a story that was told in one volume! (No need to look for another in the series.) A little sci-fi, a little fantasy, a little romance, and a little adventure all add up to a good read!
