Overview

Making a killing in business is one thing - doing it for real is another.

Private Investigator Sam Dyke turns down a job that would require skills that he doesn't have - patience, computer-literacy, tact. Then he finds that the skills he does have - tenacity, aggression, street-smarts - are exactly the ones he needs for his next case - hunting down a cold-blooded murderer who seems to know what his every step will be.

To solve the case Sam must negotiate with his ex-wife, cement a relationship with a new love, unravel an office-based financial fraud and fight off an arrogant murderer armed only with a pen-knife. Altered Life is fast-paced, bitterly comic and introduces a tough new English private eye who knows what he wants and, usually, how to get it.

Altered Life has been the number 1 free downloaded hard-boiled crime novel on Amazon UK.

"Right out of the gate, this is an amazing novel for first-time author, Keith Dixon." - Ron Peters, POD People.

"If you like private eye stories, you owe it to yourself to check out Keith Dixon's Altered Life. I had a hard time putting it down and I bet you will too. With this book you'll be in on the ground floor of what is sure to be a successful series of 'Sam Dyke' mysteries." - Dan Marvin, The LL Book Review.

    276 pages, first person, boring

This is another across the pond mystery. It is about a private investigator, has 276 pages and is written in the first person. It is well edited and a murder mystery. I was hoping for something along the lines of a Periot mystery. This was not it. This book was so boring, reading blank sheets of paper would have been more stimulating. I read the first 35 pages willingly, hoping the book would improve, I forced myself to read the next 50 or so pages, then gave up completely. I just plain could not make myself finish this book. It is not chick lit. It is rooster lit, especially if the rooster has a very low IQ. My recommendation, skip this freebie. There are many adult topics for ages 18 and over.

Too long, tedioys Too long, tedious

I found it very difficult to remain interested in this story, but I managed to read the whole book. It never really captured the essence of suspence until about the final 30 pages when the killer had already been revealed. I did not guess the identity of the killer, yet I found the story to be rather boring and the book too long by about half. The story is set in England, with many references to specific highways that were meaningless to me and use of colloquialisms that were equally meaningless. It's not the worst of books, but I would not recommend investing either time or money on this book when there are so many better reads from which to choose.

    How discouraging!

Finally...a good writer with an excellent command of the English language, who also properly proofreads the manuscript! The only drawback is that he wasted his superb writing skills by telling a story whose protagonist is the most inept, bumbling, boring and ill equiped private investigator who only a six year old child could imagine as possibly being capable of doing a professional job. Aaaarrrgghh!!!!!!

    Gratifying read

Keith Dixon has put forth a very well written story. This is an entertaining novel that is well worth your time. The characters are intriguing and the story flows along at a good pace.

A book that I read in 3 days. Entertaining but it became repetitive near the end. Perhaps this is the English version of a Sam Spade novel and I suspect they would get better with time.
