Some Things Shouldn't Be Messed With!

Excluding his non-fiction books, Altered Realities, at 500 plus pages, may be Mr. Roeder's most ambitious project to date. The concept is not new. Reality has been altered for years on Star Trek, The twilight Zone and the Outer Limits. What makes this an entertaining work is not the fact that he messes with the time line and deals with several altered realities at the same time. Mr. Roeder takes characters that he has already created and brings back the past friends that we, the fans of his work, recognize and have come to love or hate and gives them new life. The 'What if?' question is dealt with rather well here. The overriding theme in his novels is that every thing happens as it is supposed to. I have some 'tongue in cheek' problems with some of this approach, but his point here is that Evil can and does interfere and change events when allowed to do so. Any fan of Mr. Roeder's work already knows that he is the author of the Gay Youth Chronicles. All of the characters in Altered Realities are from different books in that series. This book will make much more sense to his fans who have read the series that starts with The Soccer Field is Empty. Old friends to his readers are given a new twist of personality and a lot of thoughts provoking situations come to mind. If the real mission of a good writer is to both entertain and make his readers think, Mr. Roeder has done his job well. If you are not familiar with his writings, here is a suggestion: Read Altered Realities first then go back and read the other books in the series. When you are familiar with the characters as they were originally invented, you will get more out of this book when you read it for the second time. The story in Altered Realities is tight, dark, gritty, entertaining and in the end uplifting. It may, actually be a good place to let this series rest and take a different tack, with new characters and a new story line. In Altered Realities, Mr. Roeder shows his maturity as a writer and ability to keep his facts straight and his characters connected. It takes a lot more concentration to track this story than in most of his works. It, perhaps, is a bit longer than necessary, but he does keep it together well. It has been a good trip and I know that I will visit the series often. Mr. Roeder has a rather active group site on Yahoo and some of his readers have had concerns about one character in particular. All through his series, Ethan has been the home base with whon all his characters have come in contact and the glue that holds the series together. The concern here was how Ethan could forgive the person that used and abused him so badly. This is not the forum for a speech, so I will stop with this thought. Without the willingness to forgive and the character to extend it on all levels of our lives, whatever it entails, Grace won't lead us anywhere, let alone home. We can't mess with the time line and change the past, but we can through the exercising of our Free Will, the activation of our Faith and with the guidance of God's Grace, change our own reality and affect our future and those around us. Perhaps the greatest Evil is doing nothing and letting life just happen. My thanks to Mr. Roeder and am glad he overcame his reservations and published. People will be talking about it for some time and will, of course, get different things from it depending on where they are in life.

The road to Hell is paved with good intentions...

I was surprised that this book was so long! But it included all the stories and characters of the Gay Youth Chronicles and tossed them all upside down. I loved every moment I spent reading this, so intriuged I could barely put it down. It's better if you have read all the other books but you can read this one and keep up, that's something I love about Mark A. Roeder's books, you can jump in anywhere and not drown. This Reality is a must read!
