Overview

Together with its companion volume, Religion, Biotechnology, and Public Policy, this volume accomplishes three major goals. First, it analyzes the ways that concepts of nature and 'the natural' function in various modes of discourse; viz., spirituality and religion, philosophy, science and medicine, law and economics, and aesthetics. Second, in the context of that broader discussion, it reviews recent religious discussions of four specific areas: biotechnology and assisted reproduction, biotechnology and genetic enhancement, biotechnology and human-machine incorporation, and biotechnology and biodiversity. Third, it identifies the broader theological themes and values at work in those more focused discussions and suggest ways that policy choices in biotechnology may be illumined by devoting greater attention to religious perspectives.
