Marc Bauer has an incredible way with words; his descriptions are vivid yet simple and not overdone; you see what the characters are seeing, you feel what they are feeling; you feel like you are there. I felt like I was experiencing what they were. After an admittedly slow start, I found “Alternative Energy” hard to put down, as I had to know how everything would turn out. Each time I did have to stop reading, I found myself thinking and pondering on what I had read, and what might happen next. There is a lot of language, and I did notice some editing mistakes but nothing that made me like the book any less. But some pickier readers may notice, so I’m mentioning it. I liked the ending and thought it all wrapped up nicely… good payoff in my time invested in reading this book. Would recommend to fans of edgy fiction.

4.5 stars - Alternative Energy by Marc Bauer is a coming of age novel centered around the main character Brandon Baker (as well as a great cast of supporting characters) that take us from the small town in Canada to the oil rigs as he tries to make his way in the world, despite the fact that things aren’t what he expected… It does take a lot to really impress me these days, but there were at least several times in this book that I was caught off guard and surprised, or moved by what happened. Some things were a bit predictable, but still an engaging page turner. A few minor editing things, and some conversations and scenes could have used more focus, but overall a captivating and unexpected experience. Recommend this one, probably most suited for adults.

4.5 stars What a ride! This was a totally unexpected for me, to be honest… from the description I was a little confused just what to expect, but I was intrigued by the quality writing sample and decided to dive right in. Well I wasn’t disappointed at all, in fact I think that “Alternative Energy ” is one of the more well thought out and relevant books I’ve read in a while. I loved how Mr. Bauer writes very descriptively and with great passion. I kept wondering how it would all wrap up, and if it would work… but it totally did. Nicely done!

For me, author voice is almost everything, and it will make or break a novel and my enjoyment of it. I need to hear originality and know that the author is not trying to sound or write like someone else, but is telling HIS story in a while new way, whatever that story may be. I feel like I can smell a fake a mile away, and believe me I’ve read my fair share of books from authors who are ‘trying’ to emulate better, more accomplished authors. What impressed me the most here was that I thought that Marc Bauer’s writing style has the confidence and delightful quirkiness of a much more seasoned pro… was a bit surprised to see this is his first novel. The characters had that elusive ‘flavor’ that only comes when they are fully realized and fleshed out, something that is not easily done, especially in a novel of this size. A great read. Recommend for older teens through adults.

4.5 stars I knew by the 25% mark that I would really love “Alternative Energy” and it would go on my “favorites” shelf, and I was right! I admit I had no real expectations when starting it, seeing as how I’d never read the author before and the description didn’t exactly pull me in, because I’m not all that interested in the ‘oil and gas’ industry. ” But this book was so, so much more than that! I was so impressed with the writing and the author’s level of detailing on almost every single aspect of scenery and with the characters. The plotlines are interesting and pull you along at a great, even pace. Ending was satisfying. This is a long book, so be prepared to invest some time. But it is mighty worth it. Recommend.

oh wow, I loved this book and read the whole thing in one week, which is fast for me, especially considering this is a rather lengthy book but it just seemed to go by so fast and I never wanted to stop reading it, even late into the evening. I was totally interested by the world Marc Bauer creates and the characters’ lives that seemed realistic and authentic, yet something a city gal like myself wouldn’t experience. Too much happens in this book to cover properly in a short review so you really just have to read it for yourself… you will not be disappointed!

for me Alternative Energy by Marc Bauer was a bit slow at times and lacked a lot of the tension needed to really make me just *have* to keep reading…but even though it took a while to really get going, I do think it kept getting better as it went along. I am a big fan of the struggling protagonist type books, and it I appreciate the lengths the author went through to make his book stand out from much of the typical fare out there these days, even if for me it seemed to lose a bit of its focus at times. I liked the eclectic and diverse cast of characters, the complex, intelligent plotlines, and the overall message.

how to describe “Alternative Energy”, other than say it is by far one of the most unique and captivating novels I’ve read in a long time! I have already loaned it to my mother to read, and my brother is right after her (it is right up their alley!) The author Marc Bauer pulls us in to the story right from the beginning pages, and skillfully narrates a wide-ranging storyline full of complex and deeply emotional issues. In my opinion it really is the characters who made this story so good, each so original and conflicted in their own way, and we pull for them throughout their personal journeys. A memorable read and a keeper for sure. Recommend for fans of NA/YA literary fiction. Would love to read more from Marc Bauer in the future.

when I read books, usually I either like the dialogue, and the narrative seems flat (or too telling and long-winded) or the prose is good, but the conversations seem contrived and stiff. But I loved how seamlessly everything flowed in “Alternative Energy” with the balance between the two nicely as this made it feel authentic and well- paced. It had it all, seriously…romance, drama, humour, danger, friends, enemies…all come together to create an unforgettable, and ultimately fulfilling rollercoaster ride that I won’t soon forget.

as I read this book by Marc Bauer I found myself completely transported to Brandon’s life, completely forgetting where I was. A modern day novel with more tangents and sub plots than many others I’ve read, with a large cast of characters each of whom have their own stories to tell and conflicts to overcome. Gritty, honest, deep, intense, and funny… Way too much to delve into here, but this is a book I won’t soon forget, and if you are looking for a unique take on NA/YA set in a unique setting (Canadian oil rigging) look no further. Great writing too!

4.5 stars ----- I personally thought ALTERNATIVE ENERGY by Marc Bauer was really good, and this is really not normally the type of book I’d gravitate to (I’m more into paranormal romance) And in the beginning, I admit that I really wasn’t sure where the story was going but once I was about 25% in I was totally hooked and didn’t want to stop until I’d reached the end. I would describe this as a drama, but there great dialogue (my favorite part of the book) and crazy plot twists, and great character development. So you will definitely stay interested. And I like how the author writes in a way that you can totally picture everything, almost like we are watching a movie. It’s told in first person through Brandon’s point of view, which is cool. I did notice some minor proofing errors, but nothing terrible. Hope this author writes more in the future, I’d read it. Very happy with the ending as well.

okay, I liked “Alternative Energy” much more than I actually expected to! When I read the description I was sorta on the fence, but I thought I’d give it a chance to see where it went… wasn’t disappointed in the least! It did take some time to really get to know the characters and have Brandon embark on his adventures, but once it got going I was in for the ride… it was longer than most Young adult books, but I didn’t lose interest once. Probably because the dialogue and unexpected events kept things moving at a good pace…. Read this book, even if it’s not your normal type. A fulfilling read and a good experience overall.

I really liked this book, and honestly the more time that passes, the more I think I like it… I finished last week, but it is really sticking with me for some reason, and I think I’ll re-read it again someday. I read tons and tons of YA/NA, and this one stands out as having more “character” and “depth” than most I’ve read. It was totally realistic and edgy and gritty and not at all contrived. The writing is very good and natural sounding…. And I liked that we were able to figure out what the title meant towards the end, lol. I did notice some proofing errors, but nothing that finished my enjoyment any. I think this author has a promising career if he keeps writing because I loved the tone and style of his writing. And you can tell he has great stories to share!

I was intrigued by “Alternative Energy” from the beginning. I loved the creative and strong characters and plots that continued to build and shock and surprise. Just when you think you know what’s happening, something comes along to throw a wrench in it. This is good because I HATE books that are super predictable. And this one isn’t. Although there are some familiar themes and tropes at play, Marc Bauer brings a fresh voice and makes it all his own. This is more of a character-driven novel then an action-driven one (although there is that too…) and there is something of almost everything in it. A longer book, but one I enjoyed. There is a lot of language, for those who don’t mind it (I don’t).

4.5 stars... I am not one for rehashing the plot (that is what the description is for) so I’ll just say what I liked and didn’t like about this novel “Alternative Energy” by Marc Bauer. First with what I didn’t like: I thought it could use some editing, as there were times that the missing (or incorrect) punctuation was actually confusing to me and I had to re-read sections to figure out exactly what was being said. Sometimes was difficult to discern direct thoughts from the narrative, and the too-frequent use of saying character’s names in conversations was distracting (no one speaks like that in real life… it’s weird). But I loved the plot line, as it was really original and unlike anything I’ve read before. I was really invested in the character’s fates, and was surprised more than once. I thought the ending was perfect (and explains the title), and overall it was a genuinely good book. Recommend.

this was the first book I’ve read by this author Marc Bauer, but I certainly hope it’s not the last. He has a knack for writing descriptive and authentic scenes that make us feel like we are really there inside the story, as opposed to it all just being “told” to us, as so many rookie authors make the mistake of doing. I like that this book didn’t feel stale or derivative, but instead like a new niche of coming of age that serves well to help diversify a somewhat cookie-cutter NA genre (in my opinion). I did notice some editing mistakes that could be handled with a good proofreader, but overall the entire novel was one that I thought was nicely executed and delivered an emotional win in the end.

wow, “Alternative Energy” By Marc Bauer was awesome! I haven’t read anything like that in a long time, if ever. For once it seemed like the characters were anything but the stock, ordinary typical hero/protag guys, but instead all had demons, motivations, secrets, and I don’t want to focus too much on it, but I thought the Canadian based/oil rigging aspect was pretty cool too. All came together to create a fresh-feeling novel that was out of the ordinary and kept me hooked throughout. This was a standalone novel (not a part of any series, it appears), but I hope Mr. Bauer writes more like this in the future. I’d be reading it!

this is an excellent book that captured my attention from the beginning and never once let it go. Each scene was riveting, imaginative, and well developed. The characters were interesting, and the descriptions were good and kept to a minimum. Hope this author writes more books like this…He has a natural gift for creating a well-thought out story arc and developing authentic, memorable characters. A great addition to the New Adult genre, and I liked that it had a male lead, as usually they are females (at least the ones I read). Great job.

well, this book took me a long time to read, but in the end I’d say it was worth it! I like how everything came together, and I’m sad that it’s over now… The author writes VERY well… very descriptive and strong and natural sounding, especially the conversations— we feel like we are there almost like watching a movie or something. I liked how flawed the characters were, but were searching for a better life despite outside conflicts. SO much like life! Overall an interesting and engaging novel that pushes the boundaries of typical literature, in my opinion.

a compelling read, and one that will definitely appeal to fans of drama/coming-of age literary fiction fans. Marc Bauer infuses a unique blend of serious drama and heavy issues, humor and sarcasm, witty banter, romance, adventure and some unexpected twists. The story itself was fairly even-paced, but I thought the beginning was a bit slow until things started to pick up. The practice of the characters constantly saying each other’s name in conversation was annoying and unnatural-sounding, but other than that they flowed well and moved the plot forward nicely, sparing us of the dreaded “telling” that so many authors tend to do. We feel like we are a part of the book and I recommend for fans of literary drama

Alternative Energy by Marc Bauer is one of the most original and well-crafted novels I’ve read in a long time! I was completely drawn in from the get-go, and absolutely loved the author’s use of description of the different scenery and locales, and his attention to detail. This is an ‘edgy’ book, the Brandon goes through some personal crisis and transformations… there is language and adult subject matter…interesting insight into the oil industry, never read about it before. Highly recommend!

I found myself wavering around while reading Alternative Energy by Marc Bauer. At first I was intrigued by the story, but then I felt like it was taking too long for something to actually happen to grab my interest and keep it. There were times I felt the story wasn’t as focused as I’d like, with some conversations and scenes maybe weren’t necessary and perhaps could have been eliminated to tighten the narrative and pick up the pacing some. But at the same time it felt fresh and unpredictable, always a nice experience, and I really enjoyed the characters, as they were. Some minor editing things with punctuation caught my eye, and I do think it could have been shorter… but the book had a great message and I am glad I read it. Recommended for adults only.

from the opening pages of Alternative Energy I knew it would be different from the books I’ve been reading lately and I was right! Mr. Bauer sets of the scene and characterizations in a skillful way that not only pulls us in, but creates great visualizations and elicits emotional investments. I truly cared about Brandon and the other characters’ fates, and was shocked and saddened at certain things (no spoilers). An interesting and diverse cast of characters, along with several intriguing plotlines interwoven against unique setting makes this a memorable read for me. Highly recommend.

this book was terrific! Once I started reading I didn’t want to stop until I’d finished the whole thing (although it did take me a week to finish it – fast for me!). It pulls you in from the beginning, and I enjoyed the author’s “voice” and style of writing. The interweaving plotlines were intelligent and not predictable, and the element of oil rigging was a new angle for me. The characters were all interesting and fleshed out, quirky with personal demons, and although there were some grammatical and punctuation errors, it wasn’t anything that really bothered me. I’d love to read more from this author in the future!
