Alternative Medicine and Your Health

Editorial Reviews

This new series, Compact Guides to Fitness and Health, provides quite helpful information. Alternative Medicine and Your Health describes unorthodox approaches to medicine, and the kinds of problems that usually make someone seek them out. The authors explain how the different types of treatment (for example, chiropractic, acupuncture, or biofeedback) work and how to tell a good provider from a charlatan. FDA regulations regarding alternative medicine are also explained. All books in the seventeen-volume series, including Eating Out: Your Guide to Healthy Dining, Medical Tests Every Man Needs and Your Guide to Vitamin and Mineral Supplements, are written in easy-to-understand language. The problem with these books is that, although they are indeed compact, there is really little information to be had in so few pages. They probably would not do for writing any kind of in-depth report or paper. Although the series title as well as the brevity of the books suggest that they might be intended as "pocket" or take-along books, their dimensions and the library binding do not make this use practical. This series is a great idea, but the Mayo Clinic Health Information professionals need to decide its true purpose. Glossary. Index. Illus. Photos. Charts.
