Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Patricia Blagman, EdD, RN (Pace University)
Description: This CD-ROM contains a directory of natural remedies from herbal to homeopathic and Ayurvedic therapies. The program requires Windows 95, 98, or NT to run, and 85 MB of hard space.
Purpose: Presenting the material in this format makes it easy for the user to conduct searches in a relatively straightforward manner. Because subjects are cross-referenced, a user can readily go from a substance to a disease to an action.
Audience: I believe the non-professional user will find this work useful for basic information. For the professional, more complete referencing is needed. For example, references are available, but often no publication dates or publishers are given. No research studies are mentioned. It could be helpful for a professional when following up with a client who uses alternative remedies.
Features: This CD-ROM includes remedies, in what health conditions they can be used for desired actions, sites of action in the body (organs), and photos of selected herbs. This product is easy to install and use, has beautiful slides of many herbs, and cross-referencing is easy to navigate. I would have found it helpful to be able to move around in one section. For example, when going from one remedy to another it is necessary to go back to the first screen and select the remedy again to move to the other one.
Assessment: This product has outstanding color photos. Many would enable a user to identify a particular plant. Aside from the photographs, I am not sure this format is any more useful than a book. However, it certainly is easy to look up health conditions to find a remedy and obtain information on dosages and precautions.
