In A Chipmunk Christmas, Alvin, Simon, and Theodore have an unforgettable holiday that ends with them singing at Carnegie Hall. Throughout the story, they sing their own inimitable renditions of beloved Christmas songs. Interactive sound prompts allow readers to listen to dialogue and unforgettable Chipmunk Christmas music, including “Jingle Bells,” “We Wish You a Merry Christmas,” and, of course, “The Chipmunk Song.”

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Alvin and the Chipmunks’ 1981 television special gets restaged as a padded oversize book. When Alvin takes pity on a sick boy and gives him his Golden Echo Harmonica, he has nothing to play at the Chipmunks’ concert at Carnegie Hall. In the end, though, his kindness is rewarded. Picture prompts correspond to battery-activated sound panels that play dialogue and five songs, including “Deck the Halls” and “The Chipmunk Song.” The cheerful digital images and familiar songs should draw nostalgic adults as well as young readers. Ages 4–8. (Oct.)
Kirkus Reviews
Alvin, Simon and Theodore have been entertaining television viewers for three generations, with more fans garnered from three recent movies starring the singing chipmunk group. This book with song and sound effects is based on the 1981 TV movie, A Chipmunk Christmas. Alvin and his brothers are preparing for Christmas when Alvin gives his special Golden Echo Harmonica away to a boy named Tommy because the boy has been sick in bed for some time. The missing harmonica causes problems when the chipmunks are invited to play in a concert at Carnegie Hall on Christmas Eve, but Mrs. Claus mysteriously comes to Alvin's rescue with the gift of a new harmonica. Eight buttons on the side of the book can be pressed to hear a short phrase of dialogue or a line from a Christmas carol or "The Chipmunk Song," with coordinating icons placed within the text as prompts for the sound effects. The story is predictable and sentimental, with blandly commercial illustrations in the style of the 1980s movie. Those chipmunks can be annoying to adults, especially with the squeaky songs, but lots of kids adore Alvin and his brothers. Just make sure you're not in the room while they are doing it. Meet the Author

Creator Ross Bagdasarian debuted his animated music group, Alvin and the Chipmunks, in 1958. The comic books, TV series, and albums that followed in the next decade ranked the characters #1 in popularity with kids. In 1981, the holiday classic, A Chipmunk Christmas premiered and sparked a re-launch of Alvin and the Chipmunks as an Emmy-winning animated series during the 1980s and ’90s that rated #1 on Saturday mornings with kids for almost a decade. Top-grossing films and Grammy-winning soundtracks released between 2008 and 2011 prove once again that Alvin and the Chipmunks is a brand with true staying power.
