Overview

On the run for nearly half her life, Jenny Cope’s arrival in Oregon’s Willamette Valley touches all she meets. She most affects two men, one mentally challenged, the other emotionally strangled. Jenny falls in love with Alvin Harris, whose childhood tumble leaves him with few worries. Sam Cassel’s wounded heart pounds with unrequited love for Jenny, but his lifelong friendship with Alvin precludes Sam’s advances. That and a sense of familiarity, Jenny similar to Sam’s late wife, a woman brutally murdered.

Introducing the series, this novel weaves 1970s history through the lives of Alvin, Jenny, Sam, and Tommie Smith, Alvin’s best friend. Tommie carries his own injuries while balancing Sam’s hidden feelings. When Alvin and Jenny have a child, Sam steps away. Jenny learns some of Tommie’s burdens, a tragedy Sam also endured when his wife died. When Jenny’s horrific past emerges, she seeks Sam's comfort, not the man she truly loves.

Love and betrayal tangle with village feuds and narrow minds as a trio navigates roads rainy but lush, colors bright from thunderstorms which scare Jenny to death. The reason behind her anxieties can’t be altered, but in Alvin or Tommie’s arms Jenny finds solace. Yet in Sam’s grasp, whether on the dance floor or reliving her terrifying childhood, Jenny knows a deliberate calm. That peace threatens to unravel all Jenny and Alvin have built together on a farm harboring ancient secrets as disturbing as Jenny’s past.

Meet the Author

A California native, I lived in Britain for eleven years, moving back to The Golden State in the spring of 2007. I'm leaving these stories for my grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Right now there’s only a grand-basset to consider, but one of these days, my descendants can peruse all I've sent into cyberspace. In the meantime, you can too. And thank you so much for reading an independent author.

    Waste of time

This free 202 page book, does not have a conclusion. The reader must purchase book two to find out what happens after this one comes to an abrupt stop. Almost every character in this book is mentaly and/or bodily damaged. There is a lot of sex, incest, parental abuse, cursing, whining, verbal abuse, death from various causes, screaming and talk of women's periods. There is some pretty warped relationships and an over sbundance of crying for every reason known to mankind. There is also some tender moments, but these are few and far between. It seemed to take forever to read this book. I kept reading because I wanted to see how the author concluded the multitude of crisis. Then boom, nothing. I was really aggravated. This book is set in 1975-76, in Oregon. The editing was very well done. I did not really care for any of the characters except Alan and he was portrayed as an idiot one paragraph, mentally and emotionally challenged the next and in the third, a calm, cool, collected, emotionally stable, almost genius, who never makes a mistake. The author could not decide what role Alan was playing. This is not a mystery. It is 25% romance wanna be, 75% angst. Chick lit, but this chick disliked it. Not recommended reading from me.

    Enjoyed the whole series

This series may be considered slow to some, to me, it was everything. Not too rushed, great character development, good plot line, etc. This is a moving story about ordinary people, each with their own burdens to bear, and how sometimes love, not blood, binds a family. I read the first three, and can't wait to read the fourth. Funny, when I had to put the last one down, I found myself wondering, "what next?".

Very touching story about ordinary people who are misfits in one

Very touching story about ordinary people who are misfits in one way or another. It left me with a warm feeling inside. I happen to enjoy the words she uses which are just as important to me as the storyline but I understand that each looks for something in particular when reading.

Very interesting story. Was it coincidence or fate or God intervening in Jenny's life? It shows that a little bit of kindness goes a long way. Be sure to read the next five books in the series.

I have read this entire series, and I have to say, it is pretty

I have read this entire series, and I have to say, it is pretty horrible.  I read the first book and felt like I needed to finish the story.  And the first three books aren't too bad.  Then I got started on the next three and they are truly horrific.  It seems like the author had an idea and wrote the first three books.  And from there it just turns in to ridiculously dramatic, sickeningly sweet, outrageously impossible drivel.
If you're in the mood to read and read...and read and read for days on end, then go for it.  Because all of these books are twice as long as they need to be.  The stories would be so much more fun if someone had actually edited them.  And the author constantly - like obsessively - repeats the same trite metaphors and descriptions of these ridiculous and completely unbelievable characters.
If you're in the mood for a good story, don't waste your time on this.  There is a kernel of a good story in there, but it is buried in so much ridiculous drama that it's really not worth the effort it takes to find the story line.
Also - if crying for no reason annoys you, don't read these books.  Every single character breaks out sobbing anytime the wind blows.  At first it's weird, then it's funny, then it's annoying, then it's just infuriating.   Quit sobbing and get on with the story.

Great story and characters. Story of friends, families, love and emotions. Shows you don't always have to be blood related to be a family. Heartwarming.

    Boring!

I kept hoping that the writer was going somewhere with the plot, but sadly no. The characters were very interesting, however the story feels like it's being told by your most boring great aunt. Too many "oh, Jenny Cope!" And repetitive details.

    Long book

I couldn't get through this book. I wanted to, because the storyline sounded good. It is way too wordy, and needs to be edited down though. It keeps repeating the same things over and over again. I got about halfway through the book and decided that its too slow moving of a story for me.
