Alvin, AKA the "Magnificent Brain," is convinced the scrap of paper he has found contains a secret message written by a spy. He and his friend visit Mr. Link, who knows all about secret codes. Alvin and his buddies learn all about codes and ciphers from Mr. Link, knowledge that becomes invaluable when an important secret message does appear in town. The book was originally released in 1963, which is occasionally intrusive-for example, Alvin uses his code-cracking skill to discover the wholesale price of a "hi-fi set," something today's youth may only know from museums. Most of the text is timeless, and I suspect many readers will quickly invent their own codes and ciphers based on the material presented.
