Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Katie Mitchell
Supposedly the perfect couple at their upscale high school, Charli and Blake's romance is rupturing the summer before junior year. Charli, who prides herself on being a strong, confident young woman, is feeling pressure from Blake to make their relationship more physical. She is also juggling the dissolution of her parents' marriage and the stress of being captain of her cheerleading squad. Blake is a top performer on the football team, but cannot seem to live up to his father/coach's expectations. When his mother is diagnosed with cancer and his father becomes even more demanding, Blake places his own desires first which only serves to drive away the important people in his life. Always Upbeat/All That is the first in a series of cheer drama/baller swag flip books. Moore, the author of several Christian fiction titles for young adults, has partnered with her husband, ex-NFL player, Derrick Moore, for this series. The novelty of the flip book format and the name recognition of the authors may spark some interest in the series; however, the stories read like a bare-bones outline for a glossy African American teen soap opera. There is no character development and predictable subplots. Tthe most overwhelming issue is the abundance of stereotyping and sexism that takes place throughout the storylines, such as Blake's attraction to and disapproval of a young woman who dresses provocatively; his rescue of her after an attempted assault; and his eventual physical encounter with her when Charli refuses to engage in a sexual relationship. This series adds nothing new or substantive to the hi-lo urban literature genre. Reviewer: Katie Mitchell
