Editorial Reviews

September 2009 Living with Teenagers Magazine
“…this book turns into a suspenseful read for teens, complete with a cliffhanger ending.”
Focus on the Family
“Shaley and Rayne are not believers. However, Shaley has a clear sense that she is missing something valuable in her life. Carly Sanders, one of the band's back-up singers, is a Christian. She is a solid lifeline in the midst of the tragedy, offering prayer and comfort when Shaley is on the brink of despair. Carly speaks openly with Shaley about her Father in heaven and assures Shaley that she is not alone in her grief. Shaley asks why bad things happen, and Carly admits that she doesn't know everything. Instead, she shares her own story of redemption and encourages Shaley to rely on God for strength. Although Shaley does not immediately accept God's salvation, Carly's gentle and persistent faith stirs her to contemplate the truth behind the claims of Christianity.”
Youth Worker Journal
“It is incredibly refreshing to read fiction for young women that does not have a vampire or a morose, moody, teenage girl as the hero… This is a great one to hand off to your book-obsessed junior-high girls.”
The Christian Manifesto
“… a fast paced whodunit set against the intriguing backdrop of rock star celebrity. [Brandilyn’s] adult fans will find much to rave about, while new teen readers will love the youthful voice and perspective that Amberly Collins brings to the table ... Mother and daughter have stormed onto the YA scene in exhilarating style.”

“With a satisfying ending, Always Watching leaves enough of a cliffhanger to make you want to finish the tour!”

Sixteen-year-old Shaley O'Connor is on tour with her rock-star mother when she discovers the corpse of her mother's hairstylist backstage. Determined to solve the mystery, Shaley becomes an amateur sleuth. Coauthored by best-selling suspense novelist Brandilyn Collins (Dark Pursuit), three-time winner of the American Christian Fiction Writers Award, and her daughter Amberly, this solid teen mystery, the initial entry in a new series, will appeal to young girls and adults who enjoy a good yarn. The mother-daughter sleuthing team is appealing, making this a solid choice for mother-daughter book clubs. Recommended for public libraries.

Kirkus Reviews
Backstage drama and murder in this series opener. Touring is part of life for 16-year-old Shaley, whose mom is the lead singer in a rising rock band. After Shaley finds the body of a murdered tour staff member, she decides to solve the mystery, especially as the clues seem to lead to her absent father. The authors waste no time with character development but leap straight into the semi-glamorous life of a rock star's child. Shaley reads like a watered-down conglomeration of the pop celebrities of the 2000s, to the point that the premise seems dated already. The Collinses (a mother-daughter team) divide the narrative between Shaley and the serial killer, using the split views to give insight into the (pallid) motivation for the murders. One interesting note is the almost complete absence of religion from the text, which is surprising for a Zonderkidz book. Shaley's deceitful and creepy unidentified father figure creates an uncomfortable parallel with the concept of a watchful God instead of acting as an intended foil. Readers will have to keep looking for well-written, cutting-edge teen Christian fiction. (Mystery. YA)

Always Watching by: Brandilyn Collins & Amberly Collins

Life is far from boring for young Shaley O'Connor, traveling with her mother's tour. The Rayne Tour is going strong, the excitement of the fans lending energy to the beautiful Rayne. But life is going to get busy with danger lurking in the wings.

Who is watching? Why are they watching? And who exactly are they watching, Rayne or Shaley? Can the tour continue? Will Brittany be frightened away by the upheaval? Will Brittany's mom let her continue the tour with Shaley?

Action fills the pages of Brandilyn & Amberly's newest book. You'll anxiously hold your breath as you read scenes filled with suspense. Questions arise that must find an answer before you can move on. I couldn't put this book down for wanting to know who caused the danger that surrounded the members of the Rayne Tour. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

    Left Hanging

Bestselling author Brandilyn Collins teams up with her daughter to produce this suspenseful whodunit series. Written in first person narrative from the perspective of Shaley, a sixteen-year-old, this teen story keeps the readers interest. The killer's thoughts, written in third person and interspersed throughout the story, have a chilling effect.

A typical teen, Shaley's BFF, Brittany, has an intuitive ability to know the future. Unfortunately, this reader does not have that ability. The novel is well written. The characters are believable, but the story stops just in time for the next book to begin. I understand that this is a series, but I feel gypped when left with a cliff-hanger.

Snooozefest. There is a reason this was free.

I could not care less about these characters. I made it to chapter 4 and wanted to hurl my precious nook across the room. Instead, I just deleted this terrible book from its memory.

Perhaps, if others have made it further and can tell me it gets better, I will re-download.

    *~*~*~*~
Okay, I tried reading it again (based upon the good reviews here on B&N). I stand by my first opinion. This is a terribly written story. The writing is choppy, and the author somehow used too many words and not enough words at the same time. Example: "I still felt lightheaded. I really needed something substantial to eat, but nothing was available at the hotel at that hour. And our room's pay-as-you-eat bar with cookies and chips held no interest for me. My body craved protein."

Seriously? Substantial to eat? Really? What teenager speaks like this?

    Really great book!

I found this book very intense and very suspenseful. It kept me wondering through the whole book who the real killer was and had me completely fooled at the end.I suspected one and then another and too have a person that you not once expected to be the killer turn out to be the killer, was very surprising to the say the least. This book constantly had me wanting more and kept me reading with only bathroom breaks.I loved this book and i can't even really express how much.it truly was amazing!I am looking forward to reading the second one and will do so a.s.a.p!The authors of this book are truly talented and amazing to say the least.I will be looking up all of their books for more suspenseful mysteries.I was not at all disappointed with this book.To end this, all i have left to say is WOW! Awesome job! :)

    Not Just For Teens

Most of Brandilyn's books cannot be read by the BFHCC (Big Fat Honkin Chickin's Club) But this one co-written by her daughter is milder, but still full of suspense. I found it a page turner and could not turn out the light until I had read every last page.

At the end of the book I was a bit disappointed to be left hanging and I am eager to read the next book Last Breath. It was supposed to release in Sept so I will have to search for it.

I look for the family relationships in the books I read. And this one focused on a young woman who lives with a single mother. She yearns for knowledge about her father. This is what motivates her to act as she does throughout the story.

I have daughters, granddaughters and greats. Brandilyn and Amberly have developed a believable character in Shaley.

    good mystery

No offensive language, good characters.and a good mystery. The main character is a child of a rock star and is portrayed as spoiled but not a complete brat so the subjects come across as believable. I will read more by this author.

Amazing cover. Amazing characters. Amazing Story.

My almost eleven-year-old read the book in two nights, probably as fast as I did. She loved the suspense. Shaley is a really strong character. You get the feeling of what it would be like to have a celebrity mom and away from home for months at a time. The characters became friends. Going back and forth between Shaley and the murderer's perspective made interesting and fun. My daughter is so like me -- she loved trying to figure out who did it before the story reveals the murderer.

The pacing kept the pages turning and her light burning way too late at night. But she had to know what happened next.

A great suspense for young adult readers and adults who enjoy a page-turner and don't mind a ya protagonist.

    Overall a good read!

This was a great book! I was interested by the story, and it was suspenseful enough that I was able to read it in one sitting. The only thing I didn't like about it was that the ending was kind of a cliff hanger, and without buying the next book only part of the mystery is solved.

Always Watching constantly kept me on my toes. It was about a girl who's mom is a rock star on tour. Tragedy hits and her best friend is killed. It is up to her to find out who killed her best friend before someone else gets hurt. I never wanted to put the book down because there were so many questions that I wanted answered. I only gave the book four stars because at one point I felt like the book was a little boring. I was also disappointed that there was a second book because I did not realize that there was a second book till I finished reading it. I am planning on reading the rest of the books because I still have unanswered questions. I would recommend this book to my friends and family and I enjoyed reading the book.

    Hanger

This was a good read because it was free....don't read it if you don't want to have to buy the next book to see what happens. The book hooks you in and then leaves you high and dry at the end...I felt the need to buy the second book only because I had invested my time to read the free one. You cannot read the first one without buying the second one because you don't get an ending in the first one it goes straight into the second one. If the second one had been free too I might have given the first a higher rating.
