Children's LiteratureThis title opens with a loving story of a young boy's relationship with his grandmother and what he experiences during her deterioration due to the disease. Alzheimer's is presented in a comprehensive and organized manner, from the stages of the disease to diagnosis and living with the behavior and physical needs of the person affected. The information provided about lifestyle changes and assistance such as support groups is invaluable. A chapter on the history of the disease is intriguing. Mention is made of famous people who suffered from the condition. Interesting pictures, computer and scan images and useful sidebars are included on each page spread. Understanding body systems is complex, and while clearly presented in the text, understanding it is complicated here by the density of text and readability of font type throughout the book. The book contains a glossary of words that are in bold in the text, an index, and "Find Out More" resource lists of organizations, books and websites. This is a useful resource book for school reports, for children of affected families and for adults. The author is an educator for special needs children. Other titles in the "Health Alert" series include Depression, Heart Disease, Lung Cancer, Asthma and Juvenile Diabetes. 2005, Benchmark Books/Marshall Cavendish, Ages 9 to 12.
