Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Kenney moves from picture books (Cool Cars and Trucks; Cool Robots) to board books with this eye-catching abecedary illustrated entirely with Kenney’s trademark Lego sculptures. The objects Kenney uses for each letter range from the familiar (apple, dog) to the unexpected (excavator, lighthouse), but each one of his Lego creations is sure to delight: for “queen,” Kenney offers a bird’s-eye view of a 2-D playing card, and the “zipper” that closes out the book almost looks functional. Prepare to haul out the Lego bins after finishing this one. Ages 2–5. (July)
From the Publisher
"The Lego® constructions within these board-book pages are ingenious." — Kirkus

“…sure to delight…”—Publishers Weekly

Praise for Cool Cars and Trucks:

“Children who love cars, trucks, and LEGO blocks will find plenty to enjoy in this colorful book….  This visually engaging book will attract little ones interested mainly in looking at cars and trucks, as well as older kids, who may actually follow the directions and build some of the projects.” —Booklist

Praise for Cool Robots:

“The photos will inspire young builders. . . . this is just the type of challenge that enthusiasts are likely to enjoy. . . . For LEGO enthusiasts, future engineers, and reluctant readers, this is a colorful and inspiring book.” —School Library Journal

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
If your little one loves Legos then this ABC board book may hold a lot of appeal. The simple blocks have gotten pretty sophisticated over the years and from the photographs of the various items there seems to be nothing that cannot be created. The wagon on the cover is a very simple example while the building, dog, goblin, shoe, and train are certainly not creations that toddlers would be able to reproduce. Each crisp white page features the letter of the alphabet made out of Legos and the featured object. One word identifies the item and the first letter is highlighted. To illustrate, letter D is show in red in Legos and then the D is again printed in red as the first letter of the word Dog. The dog depicted looks like needlepoint rather than Legos. As an adult reading with a child, you can't help but be impressed with these creations.
Kirkus Reviews
While the Lego® constructions within these board-book pages are ingenious, Kenney's artistry may be lost on those not yet beyond Duplo® blocks. From an apple to an owl to a zipper, Legos® make up almost every object in this book. Each page features a Lego® sculpture, the first letter of the item constructed out of the blocks and a one-word caption labeling the object, all against a solid background. A full alphabet is included on the last page with, again, each letter built out of bricks. That a man can make a living building with blocks is astounding, and several of Kenney's Lego® creations are impressive and clever, particularly the shoe, the violin and the zipper. Many of the items will be easy for young children to identify in their Lego® forms, such as a house, an owl, a train and a red wagon. Others will be difficult for youngsters to name without some adult assistance, like the goblin, the kites, the nails and the yo-yo. The choice to publish this as a board book is puzzling, since children enjoying board books are typically not building with choke-hazard Legos®, and those kids who love Legos® tend to find board books babyish. Stick with Kenney's hardcover titles for the Lego®-obsessed. (Board book. 2-4 years)
