Overview

The ten Americans profiled in this book may not be familiar to some people, but their inventions certainly are. Today, we take for granted devises such as televisions, microchips, laswers, and even the Super Soaker® water gun. Within the last one hundred years in the United States, creative individuals such as those introduced in this book have pushed technology beyond the dreams of just a few years ago. Each of these inventors began with an idea for improving some aspect of life. Through ingenuity, hard work, and talent, they made their ideas a reality. Includes profiles of William Lear, Philo Farnsworth, Beatrice Kenner, Gertrude Belle Elion, Gordon Gould, Charles Ginsburg, Robert Shurney, Jack Kilby, Stephanie Kwolek and Lonnie Johnson.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Tina Chan
People may not think twice about how some products were invented nor would they know their inventors, but they will after reading this book. Readers learn about ten American inventors of the twentieth century, and the innovative products they invented that people may take for granted. Some of the inventors include Philo Farnsworth, the father of television; Gertrude Belle Elion, who co-discovered AZT, the first drug to help people with AIDS; Lonnie Johnson, who invented the Super Soaker water gun; and Jack Kilby, who co-invented the microchip. Biographies include the inventors’ family, education, and work backgrounds, as well as the struggles they faced when getting their products patented. Readers will appreciate the inventors depicted in this book, but will also appreciate the products they use every day. Black-and-white illustrations and photographs are included. Also included is a preface about patents, endnotes, a list of book and Internet resources for further reading, and an index. Reviewer: Tina Chan; Ages 8 to 12.
