Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Janis Flint-Ferguson
Clara Barton started her career as a young teacher, opening the first free public school in New Jersey at the age of 17. But her fame came three years later when the first battles of the Civil War changed the landscape of the United States. This biography makes it clear that it was not just Barton's care and support on the battlefields that makes her a famous American, it is truly the work she continued to do after the war that makes her amazing. She compiled a listing of roughly 22,000 names of soldiers who had died so that families in the far reaches of the country would know about their loved ones. Following her own illness, she traveled to Europe and was there introduced to the International Red Cross. In 1881, she brought the concept to the United States and the American Red Cross was born. In helping young readers to understand her accomplishment, reference is made to the work of the Red Cross in the Hurricane Katrina disaster. This book includes resources, vocabulary page, timeline and index along with a writing prompt that teachers can use to help elementary readers think about what Barton was able to do. The elementary reading level makes this a great book for classroom or library resources. Reviewer: Janis Flint-Ferguson

Gr 1–2—Is it possible to condense the life of any person into approximately 40 sentences? That is what Wade attempts to do in these early-reader biographies. The language is simple, both in sentence structure and vocabulary. With this kind of brevity, oversimplification is inescapable. For example, in Rachel Carson, Wade states that Carson wrote about the environment and that, "No one had ever written about this before." Of course, people like John Muir were writing about it years before Carson. Despite this problem, Wade does a decent job of introducing the salient points of these subjects' lives. Each book has elements of a standard report biography: thought questions, a time line, glossary, further reading, and an index. Though some of these features seem ludicrous for such short books, they allow young students to become familiar with common study aides. Photographs and historical paintings are set against starburst- patterned backgrounds. The bright backgrounds are a little distracting but add color and continuity. Comparable in content and more colorful than "Rookie Biographies" (Children's Press), these are fair nonfiction choices to have in a primary-grade reading corner or to use with slightly older ESL students.—Donna Cardon, Provo City Library, UT
