Children's Literature - Nancy Garhan Attebury
Little wet ducks and slick lizards are a few of the creatures that emerge from eggs in this enriching book from the "We Both Read" series. Readers learn that eggs for birds and reptiles differ in color and size. They also learn where nests can be found and about the actual hatching process. Colorful close-up photos and informative illustrations accompany the text that contains a left side page for adult or older readers and a right side spread for young readers. The act of two readers reading together reinforces the joy of reading and offers a successful experience for children. A specific icon is used when adults are to read and another is used to show children when text is for them. This book is tagged as a Level 1 reader so the children's part contains short sentences and many one syllable words. Pictures relate closely to the text to help with comprehension. Eggs of robins, ostriches, penguins, lizards, snakes, sea turtles, fish, and frogs are featured. Information is also available about insect eggs and dinosaur eggs. This book makes an excellent supplement to science programs. Reviewer: Nancy Garhan Attebury

K-Gr 2—A colorful and scientific explanation of eggs and the development of insects, reptiles, birds, and fish. The well-written, easy-to-understand text and the inviting format will encourage emerging readers to pick up the book on their own. Intended as a shared reading experience for adult and child, the dual differentiated text appears on each page, accompanied by clear, informative, full-color photos. An attractive addition that covers an important science-curriculum subject.—Elaine Charnow, Deasy/Landing Elementary Schools, Glen Cove, NY
