Amazing & Extraordinary Facts: J.R.R. Tolkien is the authoritative collection of facts about the man behind Middle-earth, and his remarkably detailed imaginative world of Hobbits and Elves.
Though undoubtedly an academic, there was much more to J.R.R. Tolkien. He was ‘kidnapped’ as a baby in South Africa, orphaned, and mentally scarred from the bloody Battle of the Somme of World War I. His major book, The Lord of the Rings, one of the most popular and successful stories of our time, was expected by its doubting publisher to make a big loss.

From ordinary places that inspired Tolkien, to imaginary creatures or settings, or from his world of scholarship to the faith that sustained him, wherever you go, you will be certain to find clues and insights that explore all aspects of the incredible Tolkien phenomenon.

What is the connection between J.R.R. Tolkien and Bletchley Park?
Did J.R.R. Tolkien predict the great storm of 1987?
To which character in The Lord of the Rings did Tolkien compare himself?
Does Sam Gamgee really bribe Gollum with fish and chips?
How did C.S. Lewis write J.R.R. Tolkien’s obituary from beyond the grave?

Find the answers to these and many other intriguing aspects of the man behind Middle-earth in this absorbing collection of stories and trivia!

If you’re wondering if today is Inklings day or why there’s a book about Tolkien at the beginning of the month. No fear and need to wonder what the book blog world is coming to. Just kidding, I know there wasn’t a soul out there with that reaction, but I confess it feels funny posting about a book and it’s not for the monthly Inklings Series. Anyway, I’ve been reading quite a few more books about Tollers and Jack for the Podcast (which I know it’s only one episode in, but I’m loving it!) and who am I not to share awesome books? One thing I think is great about this book is the size and length. It’s not overwhelming and can be read sections at a time. Plus it’s fun facts about Tolkien, so I’m not sure what else you need. But don’t worry, I’m going to keep going. There’s facts about his life, his inspirations, his life at Oxford and everything in between. Knowing more details about his life and experiences makes me appreciate his works even more. I will say one thing, I did notice a typo (the fact that I noticed may greatly affect my cool kid status) about the day Tolkien and Lewis met. In this book it’s listed as March 11, 1926 instead of May 11th. You bet I had a near panic attack, thinking I was spreading wrong information around the internet. I checked other sources though and they all said May 11th, so I’m sticking with that. And now Internet, it is official just how much of a dork I am. Anyway! This is a fun and short book any Tolkien fan will enjoy (think stocking stuffers, birthday gifts…). Oh and I just love this cover. If you could pick, what author would you love to spend a lunch with (they can be living or from back in the day)? I’d say Jack or Tollers, but unless in this magical world of visiting with people of the past I’m given the power not to fangirl times a million, I’d better go with another option, because then I’d just stare and lose the ability to use my words.
