Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Leslie Rounds
One of the "Amazing Life Cycles" series, this attractive library bound book offers grade-schoolers an overview of fish life. The pages feature quite a lot of information presented in photo captions, additional text circles and different sizes of font that may distract less experienced readers. Several dramatic, close-up, full-color photographic illustrations on every page accompany brief text that includes, initially, information that is common to all fish, including that they are vertebrates, have gills and usually possess fins and scales. The book includes one map with very little detail of the world's oceans. Information is presented about both freshwater and saltwater fish. Two typical life cycles follow, one featuring fish and one for sharks. Somewhat confusingly each stage of the life cycle shows a different variety of fish or shark. For example a pair of angelfish guard their eggs that then seem to grow into baby salmon; a female lemon shark grows into a blacktip shark pup. Later sections are specific to a variety of different types of fish: deep-sea anglerfish, salmon, stickleback, dogfish, seahorse, lion fish and hammerhead shark, each receiving two pages of coverage. These sections include just enough text to pique the interest of budding ichthyologists. The book also includes a table of contents, a glossary and an index. Since this entertaining book is likely to spark further interest, it's unfortunate that it doesn't include either a bibliography or a list of other resources. In spite of that shortcoming, it would be a desirable addition to libraries serving early primary grades and would be useful for report writing as well as browsing. Reviewer: Leslie Rounds
