Overview

Folks didn't believe that a canal connecting the Hudson River with the Great Lakes could ever be built. But a young Politician, De Witt Clinton, had vision. He knew "Clinton's Ditch" was more than possible: It was a necessary way to link East Coast ports to the frontier.

Join Cheryl Harness on an animated journey into history, beginning with the Erie Canal's groundbreaking ceremony on the Fourth of July, 1817. Celebrating the mood of post-war America, she uses an engaging text and distinctive panoramic watercolors, including detailed maps of the route, to describe a massive engineering feat and make the pageantry of the Erie Canal's grand opening come alive.

It was America's first superhighway.

Following the War of 1812, America was in need of a link to the expanding West. This link became a reality with the construction of a canal that connected Lake Erie to the Hudson River. Join Harness on an animated journey of this amazing engineering feat, beginning with its groundbreaking ceremony in 1817 and culminating in the "Wedding of the Waters" seven years later. Full color.

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 2-6-Harness has done a wonderful job of making the history and construction of the Erie Canal come alive. Facts and descriptions are related in lively, accessible language, e.g.,``...then came the stake-setters, the soil-borers, the underbrush-grubbers, the tree-chopper-downers...'' The narrative is matched with illustrations that cover each page. On one double-page spread, there are miniatures of the engineers who worked on the canal; a picture of how the locks work; a map of progress; a drawing of a swamp in which workers died of malaria; a stump-removal machine; the tow path; the low bridges; and a cross-section diagram showing the depth and width of the canal. All of the colorful illustrations are peppered with active people. Children will pore over these fascinating details.-Kate Hegarty Bouman, Susquehanna Valley Junior High School, Conklin, NY
