Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Cheryl Williams Chang
Flat Stanley is flat because his bulletin board above his bed fell on him one night. Sometimes it is good to be flat and sometimes not. Stanley dislikes being called "Flatty," but he does enjoy being flat enough to slide under doors. In this wacky adventure, Stanley has the opportunity to travel to Mexico in search of his friend's great grandmother who has the ingredients to a secret seasoning. Upon his arrival in Mexico through the mail in an envelope, Stanley encountered Carmen del Junco, the famous female bullfighter. He also befriended Eduardo. In the hunt for La Abuela (the grandmother), Stanley and Eduardo came across a group of evil chef spies who were also looking for La Abuela. There is much silliness in this entertaining book, and any "evil" can be taken lightly. This is the fifth book in the "Flat Stanley" series. The illustrations, although black and white, help a child envision what a flat boy may look like. The story is an easy read that is geared toward boys. This book includes a table of contents, lists of facts about Mexico, and descriptions of other Flat Stanley books. An elementary school library is a good place for this book.
