Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Leona Illig
The Alden children get more than they bargain for when they agree to be contestants on the "The Amazing Mystery Show," a television series in which families compete against one another to solve mysteries in different cities across the country. Henry, Jessie, Violet, and Benny, ages 14, 12, 10, and 6, respectively, are looking forward to having fun as well as winning the contest. When they meet their competition and the show's crew, however, they are in for a surprise. Fiona Best, the aunt of the children competing against them, seems interested in winning at any cost. Meanwhile, Hillary Griffen, the show's producer, is worried about falling ratings, and the cameraman, Andy, seems to have his own secret agenda. With the stress of solving clues in front of a camera, and the realization that someone is trying to sabotage their efforts, the four children find themselves in a unique situation. This is the latest entry in the long-running mystery series, "The Boxcar Children," created by Gertrude Chandler Warner. This book is true to the original, with many references to the children's family history. The plot, which grabs the reader from the first page, integrates all the characters in the action. The kids are smart, and it is clear that they know how to work together to accomplish their goals. Accurate and interesting historical details about Philadelphia are woven throughout the story. There are a few lapses in the editing, but given the intelligent plot, likeable characters, and fascinating setting, this is a book that is likely to please readers eager for a good mystery.
