Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Leslie Rounds
One of the "Amazing Life Cycles" series, this attractive library bound book offers grade-schoolers an overview of plant life. The pages feature quite a lot of information presented in photo captions, additional text circles and different sizes of font that may distract less experienced readers. Several dramatic, close-up, full-color photographic illustrations on every page accompany brief text that includes, initially, information that is common to most plants, including plant parts, types of plants and methods for scattering seeds. Later sections are specific to a variety of different types of plants: the rafflesia, pitcher plant, saguaro cactus, coconut palm tree, squirting cucumber, baobab tree and resurrection fern, each receiving two pages of coverage. These sections include just enough text to pique the interest of budding botanists. The book also includes a general map of plant habitats, a table of contents, a glossary and an index. Since this entertaining book is likely to spark further interest, it's unfortunate that it doesn't include either a bibliography or a list of other resources. In spite of that shortcoming, it would be a desirable addition to libraries serving early primary grades and would be useful for report writing as well as browsing. Reviewer: Leslie Rounds
