Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Leslie Rounds
One of the "Amazing Life Cycles" series, this attractive library bound book offers grade-schoolers an overview of reptile and amphibian life. The pages feature quite a lot of information presented in photo captions, additional text circles and different sizes of font that may distract less experienced readers. Several dramatic, close-up, full-color photographic illustrations on every page accompany brief text that includes, initially, information that is common to most reptiles and amphibians, including body temperature, amphibian life, reptile life and animal habitats. It presents two model life cycles, one for amphibians and one for reptiles. Somewhat confusingly, each separate part of the reptile life cycles shows a different type of snake, so that the eggs laid by a corn snake appear to hatch into pythons that then grow into emerald tree boas. Later sections are specific to a variety of different types of reptiles and amphibians: the egg-eating snake, Nile crocodile, green sea turtle, Komodo dragon, red-eyed tree frog, Darwin's frog and axolotl, each receiving two pages of coverage. These sections include just enough text to pique the interest of budding herpetologists. The book also includes a general map of reptile and amphibian habitats, a table of contents, a glossary and an index. Since this entertaining book is likely to spark further interest, it's unfortunate that it doesn't include either a bibliography or a list of other resources. In spite of that shortcoming, it would be a desirable addition to libraries serving early primary grades and would be useful for report writing as well as browsing. Reviewer: Leslie Rounds

Gr 3-5- These colorful, compact introductions have straightforward, easily accessible texts. Each spread has an introductory paragraph, several short blocks of text, and three or four sharp, color photographs. The two-page chapters describe the animals' common physical and behavioral characteristics, habitats, diets, and typical life cycles, and give more detail on seven representatives of the group. Each title also includes a world map, color coded to indicate habitats, and one or two sidebars per section. All four books are concise and well organized. Each section has a well-varied layout, with eye-catching arrangements of text and photos-some images resemble puzzle pieces, while others are set within circles, trapezoids, etc. Greg Pyers's "Classifying Animals" series (Raintree) offers similar information on life cycles, but each book usually includes just one animal's development as an example. By focusing on multiple creatures, these volumes impart a better idea of the remarkable diversity among taxonomic classes.-Karey Wehner, formerly at San Francisco Public Library
