Spider-girl is always "OK," but never "Great"

My overall opinion of the Spider-girl comics can go for almost any volume of this series. I have read Spider-girl because I loved (and still do) the idea of the original Spider-man having a family and a successor to his mantle.

What falls flat here is that there isn't much here that is fresh or new. Tom Defalco has been writing all the Spider-girl stories, but I think that's why Spider-girl couldn't woo a larger audience. This series should have gone with a new writer this go around.

In this volume Spider-girl, AKA May Parker, meets the older version of a Spider-girl who was around during Spider-man's heyday: Arana. This volume doesn't focus purely on the relationship between Arana and Spider-girl, but they do tussle a bit, which is a lot of fun to read and see. Spider-girl doesn't have a lot of respect for Arana, which makes me curious enough to see her appear in another volume.

What this volume does focus on is a very familiar twist to Spider-man fans. The Clone Saga rears its ugly head yet again, and this time May finds someone who looks just like her. In her civilian identity, May also has to deal with the usual drama, like her relationships with friends and her romances.

I do take pleasure in the civilian part of May's life. Even though I have gripes about this future Marvel universe looking more like the 80s and less like the year 2020 (or whatever time this should emulate), I like the friends May has and her attempts at finding a good boyfriend.

Spider-girl also has to deal with a female successor to Magneto and the all-female version of the Brotherhood of mutants. See, this is where I start to get all ho-hum about Spider-girl. Instead of going outside the box, Defalco and Ron Frenz seem to just open the dusty closet and dip the old stand-bys in a new coat of paint. I'm not against legacy, but when you have a world based in a future time, I would prefer that I see something I cannot find in any of the books of the "616" universe.

So is this a recommendation to read Spider-girl? Well, if you have gotten this far into Spider-girl, then why stop now? If you have little to no idea about who Spider-girl is, then I suggest you go to your local Comic shop and pick up an issue from the quarter or dollar bin. You might also want to find the volume 1 trade of Spider-girl and start there. I cannot highly recommend Amazing Spider-girl to everyone. I think that it's best left for people who can't get enough of the Spider-man world of characters.
