Overview

Meet Mel: Business owner. Dedicated mom. Natural-born Amazon.

It's been ten years since Melanippe Saka left the Amazon tribe in order to create a normal life for her daughter, Harmony. True, running a tattoo parlor in Madison, Wisconsin, while living with your Amazon warrior mother and priestess grandmother is not everyone's idea of normal, but Mel thinks she's succeeded at blending in as human.

Turns out she's wrong. Someone knows all about her, someone who's targeting young Amazon girls, and no way is Mel going to let Harmony become tangled in this deadly web. With her mother love in overdrive, Ms. Melanippe Saka is quite a force...even when she's facing a barrage of distractions -- including a persistent detective whose interest in Mel goes beyond professional, a sexy tattoo artist with secrets of his own, and a seriously angry Amazon queen who views Mel as a prime suspect. To find answers, Mel will have to do the one thing she swore she'd never do: embrace her powers and admit that you can take the girl out of the tribe...but you can't take the tribe out of the girl.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

This intriguing series from urban fantasist Devoti (Dark Crusade) marks Juno's first outing as a Pocket imprint. A group of Amazon women in present-day America closely guard their extraordinary powers and only interact with men for breeding. Melanippe, who left the Amazons 10 years ago to raise her daughter, runs a Madison, Wis., tattoo parlor and nurses a grudge against the priestess she believes killed her infant son. When two Amazon women are slain and dumped on Mel's doorstep, their tribe immediately suspect her of the killing. Mel soon wonders who poses the greatest threat to her adolescent daughter: the unknown murderer, the rigidly controlling Amazons or disturbingly attractive and magically skilled tattoo artist Peter Arpada. Mel can be a frustrating sleuth, jumping to conclusions and ignoring obvious clues, but Devoti's fascinating mix of myth and reality will keep readers engaged. (June)

I loved this book. I cant wait to read the next one!

I thought the plot was great, I also understand the need to protect her own family, and she also had great empathy for the families of the murdered children which is why she risked herself and her way of life to let the families know about the girls. She also went toe to toe with the tribe to try and track down the killer herself. If she was uncaring than she would have just gone on with her life and let them deal with everything including letting them deal with the police on their own. I hope the next book in the series comes out soon.

My Boredom with this book turned into Physical Agony!

I really wanted to like this book but it was just so boring! Aside from being predictable, it wasn't even interesting. Someone has been murdering and dumping young girls on Mel's doorstep. Instead of having empathy for the families involved, she just dumps the girls elsewhere and notifies no one. What a cowardly and selfish heroine. It's such a pity this story didn't appeal to me, because I love the idea of a powerful matriarchal society. I'm not sure what went wrong, but this book has all elements needed to ensure a good urban fantasy. This story is vastly different from the usual urban fantasy but once I cracked this book open, the story seem just mundane and lagging. This book reminds me of Ann Aguirre's Blue Diablo, nothing but fluff and hype. I do concede that perhaps this book just isn't for me, however, I have given the author 2-stars for the effort of originality. I definitely will not be reading the next book in the series Amazon Queen.

    Great Read

I really enjoyed this book. I guess I was in the mood for something a little different & I got it. I liked spending time in this world & the tattoo aspect was great! Pick it up - it is worth it! I can't wait for the next!!!

    Not Interesting Enough

The story was not catchy enough, I have tried to finish it but I can't seem to do it.

    Good!

I thought this was a good book, it was a little slow in some parts but for the most part it was good. I hope this is just the first in a series because I would like to see more of the characters and watch them grow.

This is a must read book for any reader of paranormal novels!

I was a little skeptical of the plotline when I first read the description, but the author did an amazing job of melding the old Amazonian mythos with the modern world. I am very eagerly anticipating a sequel.

    interesting urban fantasy

A decade ago, her Amazon tribe killed her newborn boy because of his gender; irate with the priestess whom she believed killed her child and outraged by the silence of her warrior band of sisters, Melanippe Saka does the unthinkable and leaves. She takes her daughter Harmony with her; and is pleased when her warrior mom and priestess grandma leave with them.

Mel opens up a tattoo parlor in Madison, Wisconsin. Her idyllic life ends when someone dumps the murdered corpses of two Amazonians on her doorstep; each on a different date. Mel knows someone has given her a warning that she is the target of an unknown predator. She fears for her family especially her teenage daughter, but wonders if it is the priestess, rogue warriors, or someone even more devious. Unsurprisingly, the cops suspect her, but surprisingly her former tribe also suspects her. All this is going on with the vital need being to hire someone; preferably a female, for the shop.

This is an interesting urban fantasy starring a courageous amazon whose fumbling investigation seems apropos for an amateur sleuth as she is like a bull in a china shop once she begins her bungled inquiry. The story line is fast-paced but Mel makes it work as her actions bring the fantasy elements especially the nomadic Amazons alive and well in Madison. With a fabulous late twist, Lori Devoti sets up further AMAZON INK thrillers.
