The door to the massive New York Times bestselling HOUSE OF NIGHT series has closed. Now, Kristin Cast kicks down a new door to welcome her millions of fans to her latest sizzling series.

There is a world that runs parallel to our own, a world in which the souls of the damned are caged, where they are looked over by the Furies, and where they spend eternity in torment, mirroring the devastation and mayhem they created when alive.

Someone has opened the cage.

The worst of terrors has crossed the barrier that separates our world from theirs, and the Furies send a great, albeit untested warrior—their only son, Alek—to try to bring those souls back. He is young and handsome, headstrong and impulsive, and he won't be able to do it alone.

Eva has grown up, beautiful and beloved, but surrounded by secrets. First, she will be hunted in an ancient feud that will threaten her life. Then, she will become the hunter.

With the police closing in and two worlds on the verge of crumbling around them, Alek and Eva must find each other, discover the limits of their powers, and work together to save everything they hold dear, including one another. Blending elements of mythology with the dazzling storytelling that her fans have devoured through the HOUSE OF NIGHT series, Kristin Cast weaves a spellbinding and passionate tale that starts a thrilling new series with an explosive charge.

Cast lays the groundwork for the Escaped series with a drawn-out story in which almost nothing happens. The realm of Tartarus is weakening, and the evil spirits known as Furies chained within it have escaped to wreak havoc on the mortal plane. Alek, son of the Furies, needs to find Eva, the modern-day descendant of the Oracle of Delphi, so that together they can banish the evil spirits back to the Underworld. The pacing is sluggish, and despite all the running around and getting injured, the protagonists’ actions have few consequences. It’s a foregone conclusion that Alek and Eva will become lovers, but they spend very little time actually together. Alek is brash and confident, as befits an immortal warrior, but his moments of self-doubt make him sound like a boy who’s sulky about bumps on the road to glory. Eva may be smart and responsible, but she seems too young, naïve, and materialistic to become the next oracle. All but the most diehard paranormal fans will be turned off by the weak writing, uneven storytelling, and lackluster chemistry. Agent: Meredith Bernstein, Meredith Bernstein Literary Agency. (June)

VOYA, August 2015 (Vol. 38, No. 3) - Jonatha Basye
Twenty-something Eva only has three things to worry about: which clothes to wear to the next big party, managing her social calendar, and figuring out life after college. Eva has no idea that she holds a powerful secret trapped within her DNA. Her Yiayiá saw it in her blood, but Eva was too young to understand. Everything after that happens rather quickly: she is kidnapped, rescued, and then forced to flee from those who should protect her. Alek, a handsome stranger, is tasked with helping Eva discover her true calling and bring balance to his world and hers. Since the House of Night series has come to an end, Cast has moved on to authoring her own series of novels. The supernatural element is still very apparent but focuses less on vampires and witches and more on Greek mythology. Cast’s narrative is not as strong as readers are used to. The witty, biting dialog is missing in this novel. There are also several points of view that tend to bog down the story line. Cast’s novel is considered “new adult,” which means there may be more adult situations in the story. School librarians may want to take this into consideration before adding the book to their collections. Readers who were fans of House of Night will probably want to give this novel a chance.
