I thought I had finally found an author who wouldn't demean her story by adding unneeded graphic sex scenes. Then, 3/4s of the way through the book my hopes were dashed. Unfortunately, by then I was hooked on the story. The only thing to do was skip over those pages (several of them, and several different times) and hope I didn't miss anything important to the story. Authors need to remember women are reading Jane Austin centuries later and she never took us into the beds of her heros and heroines. I would have given this book several more stars but for the pages I had to skip. It was entertaining and had some original elements, and I was even able to suspend belief regarding CPR performed in the early 1800s. There was one question I never found the answer to, regarding Lord Worthing. Maybe it was buried in those skipped pages?!?!?

Even though there are some historical inaccuracies (not noticeable to most folks, unless you really know the period), this book is an excellent read with well-developed characters. I give it 4 1/2 stars!! You see the progression and growth of the main characters throughout the whole book. The author use of dialogue is good. The plot, while a bit far-fetched, works. It's ok that the plot a bit far off field, it is after all a Period Romance! I see the influences of other great period writers in the plot lines of this book; Austen and Heyer in particular. I found myself getting wrapped up and caring about what happened to these people. Characterizations are very good! Recommended!

This is my first book by this author and I couldn't put it down! I love regencey romance books but find that many have no real plot and are too "steamy" for my taste. This book has just the right mixture of mystery, drama and a beautiful unexpected storyline. I can't wait for the next one.

Ms. Atwell grabbed me in the first few sentences with her wonderful historical voice, and she hooked me within the first few pages with her fabulous characters. I couldn't put the book down. I'm not typically a reader of historical romance, but if more novels were written like this one, I would be. I'll be watching for the rest of this series, as well as recommending it to all my friends.

Ms. Atwell, a truly gifted author, does a magnificent job in capturing the essence of romance in this stirring saga of Johnny/Johanna, the orphan waif who's the true heir of Ambersley, and Derek Vaughn, the Duke who eventually finds himself in love with a young girl he's always believed to be a servant boy. The intricate plot, well conceived and written with a graceful air that brings to life the rich, lush history of the glory that once was the English aristocracy, has us immediately rooting for the requisite heroine and hero, and hoping the villainess receives her just reward. AMBERSLEY is a beautifully written story that sings across the pages and immediately hooks the reader right from the start. Bravo, Ms. Atwell, for this first in what I hope will become a LORDS OF LONDON series!

An enjoyable read! I couldn't put it down. The well-developed characters and sub-plots kept me glued to every page. Some surprising story twists and unfinished character narratives definitely left me wanting more. Can't wait to read the next in the series!

Ms. Atwell has penned a lush, rich, historical saga that brings to mind the sweeping historicals of Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights. I can't wait to read more.

I was hooked from the very beginning. This author's first novel, "Lying Eyes" was such a great read I had to get this one too. Although they are totally different, they are equally as great. I can't wait to see what else Amy Atwell comes up with

I absolutely loved this book! it is a complete book with over 900 pages. i like stories that don't end too quickly. She is a great author and i cannot wait for her to publish more! i found myself completely engulfed in this story and could not put he book down. And when i did, all i could think about was getting back to it! best book i've read in a long time! loved that the lead couple did not fall into bed first thing, they actually got married first! highly recommend to anyone who loves reading historical romances!

I was instantly pulled into this book as I became enthralled with the story of Johnny and her childhood life as she struggled to grow up as a boy to hide her identity without understanding why, until the fateful day she is trapped in another fire and her memories come back full force. I loved Derrek and his story of pain and loss, his large heart, endearing hero complex and finally his budding attraction for Johanna. I was captivated from the beginning and couldn't put it down until I finally got to the end. There were times I wanted to cry, times I wanted to reach through the and slap the characters, and moments I would swoon with the romance. I would recommend this read to anyone who loves a great Austen type romance!

Johanna (Amber) and Derek's story was wonderfully written. So much sadness in their lives brings them together.....but happiness eventually wins out. The characters are well developed and all aspects of this story were masterfully woven which kept me hooked and unable to set this book down. Once I realized how focused on reading this book I was, the sun was coming up....another all nighter. Lol

I enjoyed it. The death of the Duke and Duchess, their four year old raised as a boy by the gardener and his wife to keep her safe. The current Duke finds out Johnny is a girl during a sword fight defending his half-sister. Johnny has been in love with the Duke but now fears he hates her for lying to him. An evil step mother in thrown in the mix trying to kill the duke so that title passes to her son. I could go on but you need to read it. I started it and stayed up all night until I finished it.

This is a story that spans many years. The Duke and Duchess are killed in a fire. Their child is rescued and brought up by the gardener and his wife. The child does not know she is the heiress of Ambersley. It is fascinating to see how the story evolves. The new Duke has a story of his own with a nasty stepmother and shady heritage. The book keeps your interest to the exciting and happy end. I would look for the book 2 of the series.
