From The CriticsReviewer: Theodore I. Putnam, MD (Children's Hospital of Buffalo)
Description: This is a text unlike most conventional reference books, dedicating its subject matter more to "how-to" and psychosocial issues. This is a brief, boiled down description and analysis of each subject covered, leaving little fat but much meat.
Purpose: The editors seek to address issues that are not covered in many standard texts, giving practical background and instructions on problems destined to face the pediatric caregiver of today. The book's worth is in its ability to impart a great deal in a short motif. The editors clearly state their objectives in addressing issues that now create most of the pediatricians' problems, and they do so admirably.
Audience: This is a good resource for residents, nurse practitioners, and established pediatricians. It has a how-to character for the former two and some good practical knowledge for the latter. The editors do not specifically target a group for whom the book is meant, but it is clearly not for students to use as a reference.
Features: The contents are directed more toward psychosocial issues and the editors only lightly touch on some clinical entities. There are numerous helpful tables and logarithms and few illustrations, but those shown are excellent. Areas of care usually not covered in standard residency programs are well written and informative. If there is anything that may be called a fault, it is the brevity with which some subjects are handled. From my standpoint, the content of the "brief" writing is pithy and germane; in other words, I like it.
Assessment: This text takes a different approach, which is where the value lies. The editors gather well-known experts in their fields and have them expand in a brief, concise, meaningful manner that tends not to overpower or overemphasize in any aspect, giving the reader maximum knowledge in minimum space. Much of the subject matter is not found in other texts I have perused, making it somewhat unique. It is almost entirely new from the previous edition, a well needed addition to anyone's collection.
