Editorial Reviews

New York Times Book Review
“No child can resist Amelia [Bedelia] and her literal trips through the minefield of the English language—and no adult can fail to notice that she’s usually right when she’s wrong.”
Children's Literature - Phyllis Kennemer
In this latest addition to Amelia Bedelia's childhood series, Amelia's class goes on a hike in the woods. When her teacher tells the students to "hit the trail," Amelia trips over a tree root and hits the trail with her face. Continuing with her literal interpretations of the teacher's instructions, Amelia Bedelia looks for a bank building or a cash machine when the class stops to eat lunch on the bank of a stream. When the teacher calls out to Amelia's classmate Wade, the girl decides to "wade" in the stream; everyone joins her in the water, including Miss Edwards. The students pick up items for the class nature table. Amelia begins by gathering some leaves, but ends up taking a caterpillar. The class watches its transformation into a butterfly and cheers when it flies away to "hit the trail." The colorful illustrations add joy to the text as they capture the delight of the students exploring nature. This is a fun book for youngsters just beginning to read on their own. Includes a note to parents with an explanation of the progression of "I Can Read Books" and the address of a suggested website for more information. Part of the "I Can Read" series. Reviewer: Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D.
