Overview

In 1957, Harper published its first I Can Read title, Little Bear, written by Else Holmelund Minarik and illustrated by Maurice Sendak. Large type, simple vocabulary, chapter-like divisions, and decorative pictures made Little Bear perfect for emerging readers — they could read the story comfortably and not feel overwhelmed by the text. Following suit came such classics as Peggy Parish's Amelia Bedelia series, Lillian Hoban's books about Arthur the monkey, and Syd Hoff's popular Danny and the Dinosaur. Many books in this series are special in the depth of emotion evoked — Little Bear, the Frog and Toad books by Arnold Lobel, and Daniel’s Duck by Clyde Bulla, to name a few — and all are ...

Grade 1 - Grade 3.

A literal-minded housekeeper causes chaos in the Rogers household when she attempts to make sense of some instructions.

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
K-Grade 3

The hilarious antics of a housekeeper whose literal interpretations of her list of chores lead to some extremely funny messes. The translator maintains the humor and the plays on words found in the original English text, thus making this Spanish rendition free flowing and amusing. It is worth mentioning that the simple narrative is accessible to beginning readers. The brightly colored cartoon artwork is integral to the presentation, as many of the jokes are played out in the pictures. Fun fare.

    Fantastic

This is a fantastic book to just let kids let loose and read for fun. A lot of times at school and at home children are often pressured to read more challenging materials and sometimes loose sight of the fact that reading needs to fun! Amelia Bedelia has always been a childhood favorite of mine. I always loved reading about her silly mistakes she made. She always made me feel better about knowing what should always have been done instead of her sometimes, obvious, mistakes. It is very entertaining and, as always, the illustrations are a lot of fun to follow along with as the children read the story.

    Gift

Gave this book to my granddaughter for her third birthday. Her mother told me she used to read the Amelia Bedelia books over and over when she was little and she couldn't wait to start reading them with her daughter. Excellent series of books for kids.

    A classic!

I loved this book when I was a child and now I am reading it to my baby. Thruth is you can appreciate it much more as an adult. It's fun for the whole family.

    I Also Recommend:

    A Classic

I read Amelia Bedelia as a child (now 40) and loved every single book for years. I was thrilled to find this book for my daughter. Since the basis of the book is a play on words, I didn't know if my daughter would like it. She's a little young (2 years old, 33 mos)for what I perceive as the target audience but I read it to her anyway. She loved it and now we read it every night.

Amelia Bedelia is timeless. These book are a pleasure for both child and parent. This book will last well into elementary school years.

    Wonderful!

My granddaughter, who is five years old, and I laughed so hard together when we read this book! Amelia Bedelia is definitely a classic! My daughter and I enjoyed her when she was small. Now nearly twenty years later she is still going strong!

    Amelia Bedelia I love you!!!

My two year old granddaughter may be too young to comprehend this book but I love Amelia and wanted to be the first one to start her library of Amelia Bedelia books. I read all the Amelia Bedelia books to my two sons when they were young. She's my kind of woman.

    My favorite!!!

I remember reading this book while I was younger and it was one of my absolute favorites. This book will excite your child. It will make them laugh and also make them feel smart and clever because they will think to themselves wow 'I know better than that'! I loved it!!!

    A reviewer

This is F-U-N!!!! If your child enjoys being read to, or reading along this is great, and will make you both laugh!!!! If your child is shy and just want you to read for her 'him', then you've got to get this book, and the other Amelia Bedelia's!!! It takes reading to another level, where you'l both be having a ball with this silly lady, and your child will , at least for a moment, forget the 'pressure', and just let Amelia tickle her funny bone!
