Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Vicki Foote
A young Amelia Bedelia accidentally breaks a mirror as she is getting ready to go to school, and soon finds out that it means she can expect seven years of bad luck. Her friend tells her to pick up a penny for good luck, so she picks up her friend Penny. Since that does not work, her friends at school try to help her find a four-leaf clover, a horseshoe, or a rabbit’s foot, but they do not find any of these. Her teacher helps her by listing superstitions about bad and good luck, and recounting her own childhood belief that if she stepped on a crack, it would break her mother’s back. Amelia’s teacher explains that it was not true, just as breaking a mirror was not bad luck. Her neighbor, Mrs. Adams, tells her that knocking on wood three times should help her with her luck. She also gives Amelia a new mirror, causing the girl to feel like she is the luckiest person in the world. This book is written for beginning readers (level 1) and is part of the “I Can Read” series. The sentences are simple, and the illustrations are plentiful and fun. The story is amusing, and beginning readers will enjoy reading how Amelia works through her predicament with a little help from her family and friends. Reviewer: Vicki Foote AGERANGE: Ages 4 to 8.
