Overview

It's hard to imagine the risks and dangers Amelia Earhart faced in the early years of aviation each time she piloted a plane. After her first ride in 1920, Amelia "knew I myself had to fly," even though there were few women pilots at that time. In 1921 at the age of twenty-four, she had not only taken flying lessons but also managed to buy her own aircraft. Amelia would go on to set major aviation recordsshe was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean and the first person to cross it twice by air. In 1937, Amelia set out on a flight around the world she belived would be the grand achievement of her aviation career. Three-quarters of the way around the globe, Amelia disappeared in the Pacific Ocean on July 2, 1937, never to be seen again. Although her own story ended too quickly, she inspired women everywhere to reach goals previously undreamed of.
