Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
A new Amelia book gives her fans the opportunity to find out what it is like to be on the mean end of passing notes. In this story, a new girl to Amelia's school, Maxine, chooses Amelia's best friend, Carly, to be HER best friend. Although Amelia tries to be cool about the situation, she begins to realize that Maxine is spreading lies about her and, on top of that, leaving nasty notes in Amelia's locker that are often humiliating and always mean. When Carly turns her back on Amelia, Amelia realizes that she needs to rely on herself and look for other friends with whom to share the school day. When she does, she finds out that she is not the only person that Maxine has been mean to; a group of girls she was mean to decide that they are not willing to take any more from Maxine. As always, the illustrations in this text promote the text and the feel of this book as an upper elementary/middle school text. The book will certainly be appreciated by those who have read about Amelia and her ups and downs before. 2006, Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers/Simon & Schuster, Ages 9 to 13.
