Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Children's Literature
Amelia's mother and father were divorced when she was a baby. Now that Amelia is ten, and after years with no contact, her father sends her a letter and wants her to come visit him and meet his new wife and baby son. Amelia has very mixed feelings. She has been very mad at her dad. She doesn't really know what it means to have a dad. What follows is a very sensitive, realistic portrayal of the emotional peaks and valleys of such a family reunion. No candy-coated happy ending either. Amelia does make meaningful contact, and we know this is the beginning of an improved relationship with her father and brother. These composition notebook stylebooks, part of a popular series, are a lot of fun. Full of colorful drawings and collaged souvenirs, they are a comfortable format as well as an inspiration to aspiring journalists. 1999, First Pleasant Company, Ages 6 to 12, $12.95 and $5.95. Gr 3-5-Amelia and her notebook are back. She has finally written to her father, whom she has never met, and received a reply asking her to come meet him, her stepmother, and her half-brother at their home in Chicago. This is a big step for any child, but Amelia, feisty as ever, takes the plunge. She predictably loves baby George, hates Clara, and is unsure about her father until he finally says he's loved her all along. However, Moss does not candy coat the situation; she allows Amelia to voice her insecurities about what it means to have a father, to be angry at Clara for reading her notebook, to feel uncute in comparison to George, and even to think her dad's hairy hands are gross. The author once again has her finger on the pulse of her audience, who will appreciate Amelia's honest expression of her feelings. The text is handwritten and colorful line drawings decorate the pages.-Holly Belli, Bergen County Cooperative Library System, West Caldwell, NJ Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.|

Rip!!! Amelia had gotten a letter from her dad. 10 years have passed. Amelia¿s letter said that her dad knows he hasn¿t been a good father and that he has his own family now. He has a son and if it¿s OK with Amelia¿s mom, maybe she can go to visit her father. Amelia writes down all her thoughts and what happens while she visits her dad. Amelia comes over her dad¿s place and all horrible things lets loose. Does Amelia become closer to her dad? Will she give her dad another chance? I think this book, Amelia¿s Family Ties , is a really good story because all these things really do happen in life. I love how the author added a lot of details. She also puts in little pictures that Amelia draws in her journal. Marisa Moss has written a whole series of Amelia journals. All of the books will make you jump out of your chair. I recommend these books to all people. If you haven¿t read Amelia¿s Family Ties it is a must read! After I read this book, I felt like other people should have the opportunity to meet their fathers if they never got a chance to. While you are reading the Amelia series, you will be on the edge of your seat! All of Amelia¿s adventures will come to life. If you pick up Amelia¿s Family Ties , I guarantee you that the book will pull you inside!

Amelia's Family Ties was a great book. This book, like the other Amelia books, is unique because it has a child's handwriting, many pictures, and shows a kid's point of view. When Amelia meets her father for the first time, she is a little uncomfortable. But she learns to love him.
